FIFA 13, Black Ops 2 outsell Dark Knight Rises at UK retail – but will game domination continue?

In a newly published UK industry report, sales analyst groups Chart Track and Official Charts Company have revealed the top selling entertainment products at retail in the region, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and FIFA 13 beating movies like The Dark Knight in terms of units sold in 2012.

Trends for this year, however, already show signs that games will have a tougher fight to the top in 2013.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 unit sales came in at just under 2 680 000 copies, followed by FIFA 13 with just over 2 600 000 units. Both of these games outstrip the unit sales of The Dark Knight Rises, which saw sales of 1 695 000 in 2012.

In the top forty entertainment products listed below, only seven are games, with the next best selling title sitting at number thirteen – Assassin’s Creed 3.

ERA chart chief Kim Bayley said of the results:

“2012 was a tough year for entertainment due to a number of factors, but this sharp 25% shrinkage in sales of the biggest titles suggests that the quality of releases was at least partly to blame.

“Luckily 2013 has got off to a good start with Skyfall already selling more than 2m copies ‒ way ahead of last year’s biggest-selling video, The Dark Knight Rises.”

Will this year’s biggest games be able to outperform sales efforts from the latest James Bond movie? Are UK sales in the entertainment sector on a downward trend?
