Mark Cerny is a game developer and technology guru that you may think you’ve never heard of, but his affects on the PlayStation library of games is considerable and he has worked on (and acted as a consultant for) games and series including Uncharted, God of War III, Resistance, Ratchet & Clank, Crash Bandicoot and more. Oh, and he’s the creator of Marble Madness!
Cerny also had the honour of introducing the inner workings of the PlayStation 4 to the audience gathered at today’s PlayStation Meeting 2013 before revealing a game of his own – Knack.
With Knack, Cerny and his development team are trying to take advantage of all of the features of the PS4, “from the graphics capabilities of the platform to the physics simulation necessary to handle our very unique hero.”
But what is Knack? The game harkens back to the raw fun of classic character-based action titles (including games he’s worked on in the past) and begins as someone known only as The Doctor manages to bind together ancient relics from a long-lost civilisation, resulting in the creation of a creature called ‘Knack,’ which possess mysterious powers including the ability to transform into a giant machine capable of great destruction.
“During the game, Knack also discovers that he has a skill (in other words, a knack!) that allows him to incorporate ice, metal and other substances into his body, giving him new abilities from level to level,” says Cerny.
“The result is gameplay which is a little bit like Crash Bandicoot, and a little bit like Katamari Damacy, in that the Knack can get quite large indeed. There’s also a touch of God of War in there, in that there is an epic feel to the game in places.”
And what yarn will be holding Knack together?
“As for the story, mankind is threatened by a resurgent goblin army and Knack steps forward to protect them ‒ until it becomes clear that an even greater danger is posed by elements of the human community.”
