The Mario & Luigi series of RPGs for Nintendo’s handhelds have been received very well in the past, and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story in particular was a mighty feat of creativity, humour and style which saw Mario and Luigi spending their adventure running around Bowser’s insides, with the chance to take direct control of Mario’s arch-nemesis through a dual story.
So it’s with great excitement that we learned of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for 3DS which seems to retain all of the ingenious hallmarks of the series, but with a major twist.
During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct online streaming event, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata gleefully announced Dream Team and revealed that in this adventure, Luigi will literally be sleeping on the job to allow Mario to enter his brother’s dreams.
Together in this bizarre world, Mario and Luigi will be able to use outlandish moves and abilities to overcome their challenges, and during the demonstration video we saw over a dozen Luigi doppelgangers carrying Mario while running through enemies.
The action plays out on the top screen, where turn-based battles and platforming will take place, but on the bottom screen you’ll be met with Luigi’s snoring face, which you can interact with (pulling his moustache, for example) which will have repercussions in his dreams.
