A flood of new 3DS titles were announced during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, and one of the surprise reveals was that Wii platformer Donkey Kong Country Returns is headed to the handheld later this year.
The original game was made by Metroid Prime developers Retro Studios and released in late 2010. It was a great critical and commercial success, selling almost six million copies and obtaining a Metacritic rating of 87.
The handheld version – Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D – will be released this summer (i.e. third quarter) and is being “rebuilt from the ground up” according to Nintendo Europe president Satoru Shibata.
A 3D trailer for the game is now available on the 3DS eShop.
