PlayStation 3 fans were looking forward to the release of the next great action adventure game from Naughty Dog in the form of The Last of Us, with a release penned in for May 7th this year.

Reports doing the rounds this week pointed to a release delay for The Last of Us, however, and the news has just been officially confirmed by Sony and Naughty Dog.

News of the launch delay for The Last of Us first swirled into life following updated retailer listings on GameStop and Best Buy in the US, alluding to a new release date in mid-June. Naughty Dog has announced that The Last of Us is now due out on June 14th around the world, representing a delay of five weeks for the highly anticipated PS3-exclusive. In a statement, the developer said:

“As a team we pride ourselves on setting a very high quality bar for every aspect of our games ‒ gameplay, story, art, design, technology and more. We want to make sure The Last of Us raises that bar even further ‒ for ourselves, and most importantly, for you, our fans.”

“As we entered the final phase of development for The Last of Us, we came to realise just how massive Joel and Ellie’s journey is,” the statement continued. “But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog’s internal high standards.”

Understandable, but no less unfortunate for Naughty Dog fans.

If there was one game that we didn’t want delayed any further, it was The Last of Us, and if there’s one game that the PlayStation 3 needed soon, it was Naughty Dog’s title. This new date also means that the game will launch just after the conclusion of E3 2013 (June 11th to the 13th), which will drown out discussion of Naughty Dog’s latest effort what with new console talk and next-gen game reveals. We hope this isn’t intentional.

Are you disappointed by the delay of The Last of Us, or does that give you more time to slog through the games of February, March and April?

Here’s the full statement from Naughty Dog:

“The Last of Us is an ambitious project. In many ways it may be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious project to date ‒ brand new universe and cast of characters, brand new tech, brand new genre, not to mention it’s easily the longest campaign Naughty Dog has ever made.

As we entered the final phase of development for The Last of Us, we came to realize just how massive Joel and Ellie’s journey is. But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog’s internal high standards.

As a team we pride ourselves on setting a very high quality bar for every aspect of our games ‒ gameplay, story, art, design, technology and more. We want to make sure The Last of Us raises that bar even further ‒ for ourselves, and most importantly, for you, our fans.

The extra wait will be very short and your patience will be rewarded. Update your calendars. You won’t even have to change seasons. The Last of Us will be available June 14th, 2013. Until then, know that we will be working extremely hard to deliver an experience that matches your high expectations.”
