Fans of the classic XCOM strategy game series were up in arms (and at least a little intrigued) when it was revealed that 2K Marin down in Australia was working on a first-person shooter set in the same universe, but with some of the same elements in tact including research and a central intelligence hub.
After a rough first showing, a series of delays and the announcement (and release) of a ‘true’ XCOM follow up in Enemy Unknown, 2K Marin’s shooter project fell into the shadows and was feared dead, with rumours pointing to a development reboot and a shift to a focus on third-person squad-based action.
During Take-Two’s recent quarterly earnings report, however, the publisher confirmed that the XCOM shooter is definitely still in the works and due for a release sometime between April 2013 and March 2014 (or the company’s 2014 financial year).
“2K Marin continues to make progress on XCOM” was all Take-Two would say about the game, other than the release window.
What sort of affinity do you have for XCOM and do you think a third-person squad shooter would fit in franchise? Did you play XCOM: Enemy Unknown? Surely you could see a more action-oriented version of that game working. Surely.
