It was recently announced that Japanese online game publisher GungHo Group (Ragnarok Online, Yogurting) has acquired Japanese developer Grasshopper Manufacture (Shadows of the Damned, Lollipop Chainsaw).
On the surface, the acquisition sounds more like a merger as Grasshopper’s ‘planning and development’ skills will be leveraged by GungHo’s ability to manage online games, but the exact terms of the agreement haven’t been formally revealed (in English, at least).
The deal is said to go into effect on February 1st (this Friday).
While Grasshopper continues work on its next action title, Killer is Dead, it’s also unclear how the acquisition will affect Grasshopper’s games going forward, and if the studio will begin to focus on online games rather than retail titles for consoles.
We’ll let you know more about this strange and sudden deal when we do.
