Kojima admits Raiden wasn’t his first-choice protagonist for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Raiden may seem like the perfect character to complement Platinum Games’ brand of stylish hack-and-slash action at the core of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance but Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has revealed that he would have preferred another cyborg ninja featured in this illustrious series to take Raiden’s place.

Speaking with IGN Middle East during a recent press tour to Dubai, Kojima admitted that Frank Jaeger / Gray Fox who features in earlier Metal Gear titles was his personal choice for the game’s protagonist but his team at Kojima Productions insisted on making Raiden the leading man:

“It was actually not my idea, it was my staff in Kojima Productions that insisted on Raiden, and I respected their idea. I wanted to really focus on production than development, and they wanted to come up with a really cool hack-and-slash title with some Katana action and Raiden in it, and I thought ‘okay, that’s fine, I respect that’.

“But in my personal opinion, I wanted to go for Frank Jaeger or Gray Fox. But if we had gone with that, I would have had to write the script and then be really committed to creating the game. I want to pass game development to the younger generation in my team, and have been trying to do so for quite some time. Before I never could give complete responsibilities for other games, but for Revengeance, they are fully in control. Besides, if I had created the game and directed it, it wouldn’t have been this game. I am very happy to see the growth in my team and how they have developed such an incredible game.”

Kojima is currently directing Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes where he has far more creative control over what is included in the final game.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 on February 19th in the US and February 21st in European territories. Head over here for El33tonline’s previous coverage of this stylish action title from Kojima Productions and Platinum Games.
