El33t’s P33k at… Wildman from Gas Powered Games and Chris Taylor

Chris TaylorWe only get to hear about game industry luminary Chris Taylor every once in a while, but when we do, he’s always involved with something terrific, new and challenging.

The last game Taylor and his team at Gas Powered Games worked on was Age of Empires Online, and Lisa and I had the pleasure of meeting the larger-than-life character at gamescom 2011 as he was promoting the free-to-play strategy title at Microsoft’s press event.

Just being in Taylor’s presence was an experience, but his humble demeanour took me off guard as he joked with us and complimented the El33tonline business card, noting how ‘fancy’ it was:

“Oh, look at you – with a QR code and everything!” he quipped.

Chris Taylor makes it very easy to root for him and Gas Powered Games simply because he’s such a nice, natural personality, so when the developer announced his next game, Wildman, I was instantly intrigued.

Following in the footsteps of Gas Powered Games’ previous action RPGs like Dungeon Siege, Wildman takes the classic concepts of that genre and infuses them with strategy elements – another strong point of the team and Taylor himself, what with the heritage of Supreme Commander, Age of Empires Online and Total Annihilation.

Wildman, however, is set in the Stone Age and tells the story of ‘primitive man’ as he discovers new tools and technology while fighting for survival with a small army of troops at his back – here’s Gas Powered Games’ (text-based) vision for Wildman:

“Imagine a game where you control a single hero — the ‘Wildman’ — dropped into the middle of a War Zone. The battle starts. Your own army begins to engage the approaching enemy.

You support your troops with your own combat abilities and skills. You shape-shift into new forms that grant you new abilities. You upgrade your armies with new technology. You construct defenses. Your opponent switches tactics; you reconfigure your army to counter.

You push the enemy back to their citadel, their home base. You face your opponent’s champion. You each rally your troops for support. You execute your special abilities with precision. Your opponent is devastated.

You survey the battlefield: the bodies strewn on the ground, the trees burned down and smoldering, the buildings turned to rubble. You collect your rewards. You evolve.

Victory is yours. For now.”

All of that and more is promised in Wildman, and Gas Powered Games has taken to Kickstarter to ask gamers to help crowdfund the studio’s next project – you can visit the Wildman Kickstarter page and pledge your support for the game now.

At the time of writing, and after two days, $133 000 of the $1 100 000 total had been pledged, but with 30 days to go the project is right on track to be fully funded.
