Disney and Disney Interactive hosted a very special news briefing yesterday hosted by John Lasseter (chief creative officer at Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios) and John Pleasants (co-president of Disney Interactive) to finally announce a brand new and exciting videogame venture: Disney Infinity.
Billed as an “all-new gaming universe with unmatched creative possibilities,” Disney Infinity is due for release in June 2013 across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U, 3DS and PC, and has been called Disney Interactive’s “most ambitious gaming initiative ever.”
But what is Disney Infinity, exactly?
From Plastic to Playable
Disney Infinity will allow players to take control of a variety of well-known characters from the world of Disney and Pixar in something of a sandbox environment filled with objects to interact with and challenges to overcome, but the way those characters appear in the game is something special.
Similar to Activision’s Skylanders franchise, Disney Infinity will make use of physical, real-world figures representing each Disney character, from Sulley (Monsters Inc.) and Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean), to Woody (Toy Story) and Jack (Nightmare Before Christmas).
Each toy contains special technology that will allow that character to ‘come to life’ in the game when placed on a special platform, which transfers that figure’s information to the virtual world.
Co-president of Disney Interactive, John Pleasants, provided his own explanation of Disney Infinity:
“Disney Infinity introduces a new way to interact with the best of Disney on one game platform, both now and in the future. With this innovative approach to gaming, Disney Infinity will bring to life new characters, stories and environments from The Walt Disney Company over time in a way that will delight fans and gamers alike.”
Bending Virtual Worlds to Your Creative Will
All of the seventeen Disney and Pixar character figures that will be made initially available with Disney Infinity will bring with them their own unique gameplay experiences when placed on the game’s special platform, or ‘Base,’ and players can use these characters to explore iconic locations from Disney’s properties (called ‘Play Sets’), while battling enemies and solving puzzles to progress.
What’s unique here is that you’ll also be collecting characters, vehicles and different gadgets from each of these Play Sets while saving them out to the ‘Toy Box,’ which is where the sandbox fun begins.
When in the Toy Box, players can go on to build their own virtual worlds and customise their own play space with everything they’ve collected, and more. Even better, you’ll be able to share your worlds with other players and friends online (and off).
Here’s what figures and accessories you can expect for Disney Infinity when the game launches in June this year:
- Disney Infinity Interactive Pieces ‒ Initially a line of 40 collectible interactive pieces will be introduced that allow players to expand and customize their play experiences.
- Disney Infinity Interactive Character Figures ‒ Seventeen character figures will allow players to experience a variety of their favourite characters in true to property experiences and in “Toy Box” mode.
- Disney Infinity Base ‒ When figures are placed on the Infinity base, they unlock the world and play experiences of Disney Infinity.
- Disney Infinity Power Discs ‒ Interactive discs can be placed on the Infinity base to power up characters and “Toy Box” with unique powers, customizations and gadgets.
