Media Create Japanese Hardware Sales for week ending December 9th: Wii U off to a solid start

This week’s Media Create hardware chart is a significant one for a number of reasons. The Wii U launched in Japan on December 8th and racked up sales of 308 142 units during its first two days on sale. While this isn’t the most successful hardware launch in Nintendo’s history, it still bodes well for the console’s future in Japan.

The 3DS also moved past the PS3 in lifetime sales despite being on the market for a fraction of the time. The handheld has sold 8 799 378 units in Japan compared to the PS3’s 8 716 260 units.

Apart from a few exceptions, console sales were up week-over-week across the board – proving that the holiday season really is the best time of year to launch new hardware or bundles, or to run specials on existing consoles.
