The latest Japanese Nintendo Direct broadcast held an unexpected surprise for New Super Mario Bros. 2 fans alongside company president Satoru Iwata’s announcement that 300 billion coins have been collected in the game thus far.
Beginning today six new courses based on classic Super Mario levels are available to download free of charge from the Japanese 3DS eShop and can be played in the game’s Coin Rush mode. This special offer lasts until January 31st, after which the pack will set you back 200 yen.
The ‘Golden Classic Course Pack’ includes the following levels:
- Round 1 from Mario Bros.
- Stages 1-1, 1-2 and 1-4 from Super Mario Bros.
- Stages 1-1 and 1-5 from Super Mario Bros. 3

Nintendo has yet to confirm whether the Golden Classic Course Pack will be available outside of Japan.
