After months of build up and years of anticipation following on from Nintendo’s last home console, the Wii U has finally launched. It’s only available in North America at the moment, with a release to follow later this month in Europe and South Africa, but gamers have already got their first taste of the machine.
General internet buzz throughout launch day was, I would say, rather cool at an average, with reactions ranging from overwhelmingly positive to positively underwhelmed, depending on who you asked and which games those new console owners had played. Our latest Question of the Day asks:
Will you Wii U? (Or, Will you be getting a Wii U?)
From the sounds of things and chatter from yesterday’s launch, the real reasons to get the Wii U would be Nintendo’s own first-party games (like Nintendo Land and ZombiU) and the range of exclusive titles. Third-party offerings like Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Batman: Arkham City and even the newly released Epic Mickey 2 seem (at a glance) to be better crafted on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Some games, like Mass Effect 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2, have interesting additional functionality with the tablet-like controller, and the new Rabbids game looks like fun, but if you’re able to play games already available on other consoles there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of reason to pick them up again on Wii U (even with bundled DLC and small extra features).
So will you be getting a Wii U? If even for the promise of new experiences with games you know and titles exclusive to the console? Potential has already been shown with a few downloadable titles (and Nintendo Land) so there’s nothing to say you won’t be getting a great hardcore and casual console come November 30th.
