It’s with some sadness that we’ve learned today that Vigil Games’ Joe Madureira has announced his departure from the studio, vacating his position as creative director on the Darksiders series of action adventure games.
Writing at his official Twitter account, Madureira said:
“So long [Vigil Games and THQ] thanks for all the memories! Darksiders was definitely a career highlight. Keep on kicking ass I’m a fan for life!”
Of course, Madureira is arguably more well known as a comic book artist and writer, having worked on Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men, as well as the creator of the Battle Chasers series.
It’s uncertain whether or not Madureira intends to return to the world of comic books or continue in the realm of videogames, but his leaving Vigil Games does cast a dour pall over the future of the Darksiders series, especially considering the sluggish sales performance of Darksiders II and the shaky financial state of publisher THQ.
El33tonline thoroughly enjoyed our time with Darksiders II (see why in our review of the game) and we’re big fans of the series as a whole, so we’re definitely hoping the departure of Joe Madureira isn’t another obstacle in the way of a third entry to the franchise.
