Witcher 2 developer CD Projekt RED has today formally announced and titled the studio’s next RPG, Cyberpunk 2077.
Previously only known to be set in a futuristic, ‘cyberpunk’ world, it’s been further revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will be sandbox in nature, while the project is being headed up by celebrated pen-and-paper RPG creator, Mike Pondsmith.
According to CD Projekt RED, Pondsmith is known as one of the fathers of the cyberpunk genre, as well as the creator of the cult classic pen-and-paper RPG, Cyberpunk 2020.
“Players will be thrown into the dark future of the year 2077,” writes CD Projekt RED, “and into a world where advanced technologies have become both the salvation and the curse of humanity.”
Cyberpunk 2077 will also stay true to the cyberpunk genre, popularised by the Blade Runner novel and movie, William Gibson’s novels and Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk 2020 game. CD Projekt RED also promises that the game will feature a non-linear story (“designed for mature audiences”), and will take place in the sprawling metropolis of Night City (and the city’s surroundings).
“Players will have a chance to visit places well known from ‘Cyberpunk 2020,’ including a combat zone completely taken over by gangs, the legendary Afterlife joint and the nostalgic Forlorn Hope.
“Freedom of action and diversity in gameplay will be delivered thanks to the sandbox nature of the game and mechanics inspired by the ‘Cyberpunk 2020’ pen-and-paper system, fine tuned to meet the requirements of a modern RPG.”
And what about the gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077? CD Projekt RED has high hopes for what it intends to provide to players, writing:
“Gameplay will pump adrenaline through players’ veins and be consistent with the celebrated Cyberpunk spirit ‒ rebellion, style, edge, uncertainty. And of course, a cyberpunk reality cannot be deprived of murderous steel ‒ guns, rifles, implants, dozens of gadgets and other varied pieces of equipment needed to survive on the streets of Night City.”
Fantastic.
