Gamescom 2012: Excitement, expectations and hopes for… Ubisoft

Written by: / / No Comments

Do you know what’s surprising about Ubisoft and its videogame release slate for 2012 and 2013? It’s surprising that we’re always so surprised when the publisher is able to stamp its authority on a showcase event!

At E3 this year, Ubisoft’s only peer as far as I’m concerned was EA. Both publishers brought an immense amount of solid, quality games to the show and despite a majority of these games appearing in the form of a third or fourth (or even more) entry to a long-standing, well-established franchise, attendees and industry watchers alike were just as excited and intrigued by brand new titles as they were by sequels on the way from Ubisoft.

What can we expect to see from the French publisher at gamescom 2012? What do we hope to see and what excites us the most? Will there be any surprises at Ubisoft’s press conference this year?

Luckily for us, Ubisoft revealed a list of games we will definitely see at the event in Cologne, Germany this month ‒ here’s the known line-up:

  • Assassin’s Creed III

  • Assassin’s Creed: Liberation

  • Far Cry 3

  • Hip Hop Dance Experience

  • Just Dance 4

  • Rabbids Land

  • Rayman Legends

  • Shootmania: Storm

  • Splinter Cell: Blacklist

  • Sports Connection

  • The Settlers Online

  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online

  • Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2013

  • ZombiU

Ubisoft has additionally announced that the publisher’s music rhythm game, Rocksmith, will be playable at gamescom 2012 thanks to a ‘Rocksmith bus’ which will be present at the Cologne Pop Festival during the running of gamescom. But surely Ubisoft will have a few reveals and announcements at its press conference ahead of the show?

I’m hoping to see (a lot) more about the publisher’s open-world game, Watch Dogs, and seeing another in-depth walkthrough video would be a real treat. I think it would be very optimistic of me (and anyone else) to expect the reveal of a new game, as Splinter Cell: Blacklist was announced at E3, and most of the publisher’s major franchises are in play at the moment. Those that aren’t, however, should probably lie dormant for a while longer.

The Prince of Persia

Except: there’s the enticing prospect of another Prince of Persia game ‒ there hasn’t been one of those for a good two years – but with the Assassin’s Creed series appeasing gamers’ appetite for free-flowing combat and movement, is there room for another game in that classic franchise? The two games are different enough, I reckon, for both to co-exist and with advancements made in the Assassin’s series, a new Prince of Persia game could be very exciting!

I won’t even hope to dream about seeing Beyond Good and Evil 2.

In terms of the games I’m looking forward to seeing and playing, getting hands-on (or even eyes-on) time with Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Assassin’s Creed III and Far Cry 3 are on my hitlist, and another session with Rayman Legends would act as a great desert to cap the experience. I’m also very intrigued by ZombiU and after missing my chance to play it at E3 this year, I’m not going to make the same mistake twice!

Ubisoft’s line-up of titles for gamescom 2012 is incredibly strong and will also provide us all with a new opportunity to have a look at the Wii U thanks to the publisher’s strong support for the console with Rayman, a new Rabbids game, Just Dance 4 and, of course, ZombiU ‒ a win-win situation!

We’re all greatly looking forward to exploring Ubisoft’s catalogue of titles at gamescom this month!

Gamescom 2012 will run from August 15th through to the 19th in Cologne, Germany. El33tonline will be there covering the event so don’t miss out on the latest news and impressions from the world’s most spectacular videogame showcase.
