Media Create Japanese Hardware Sales for week ending July 29th: 3DS XL makes an extra large splash

These are exciting times for Nintendo as the past weekend saw the launch of both the 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2. It goes without saying that both products enjoyed massive success, with the 3DS XL shifting 187 480 units during its first two days on sale. Surprisingly sales of the original 3DS only dropped by 5% – proving that both models can coexist without one cannibalising the sales of the other.

Elsewhere on the chart the PS3 continues to lag far behind the 3DS while the PS Vita is holding steady around the 10 000 mark, despite there being no new Vita retail releases this week. Sales of the Wii are up by 13% but this isn’t enough to move it ahead of the PS Vita or PSP on the chart.
