The God of War franchise is one of Sony’s most popular IPs and has so far appeared on PS2, PSP and PS3 since the first game was released in 2005. You can always count on God of War games to take full advantage of the graphical capabilities of the hardware they appear on, and the series’ gorgeous vistas, excellent character design and fluid animation has certainly helped it from a sales perspective.

Sony recently released worldwide sales data for every entry in the God of War series, revealing that combined retail and digital sales of the seven entries in the franchise have racked up sales of 21.6 million units overall. Here’s the sales breakdown per product:

  • God of War (PS2) – 4 617 347

  • God of War II (PS2) – 4 244 529

  • God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP/PSN) – 3 264 178

  • God of War Collection (PS3/PSN) – 2 418 516

  • God of War III (PS3) – 5 197 632

  • God of War: Ghost of Sparta (PSP/PSN) – 1 196 626

  • God of War: Origins Collection (PS3/PSN) – 711 737

These sales figures make for fascinating viewing for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s interesting that God of War III is the best-selling game in the series considering that the PS2 has a much higher install base than the PS3. Secondly, the fact that God of War: Chains of Olympus sold over 3 million units is very surprising when you take into account the rampant piracy that plagued PSP software sales from an early stage in the handheld’s life cycle. Lastly, it’s interesting that God of War II sold less than God of War despite being the better game in many people’s opinions. Perhaps the fact that God of War II released just after the PS3’s launch meant that some PlayStation fans were already invested in the next generation of software by that point.
