Although we all knew a 2D side-scrolling Mario game was in development for their upcoming console, the Wii U, up to now it has not been officially announced. Today in their E3 conference Nintendo rectified this and confirmed that it will be a launch title for the Wii U. Along with the announcement Nintendo have released a batch of screenshots showing the diverse backgrounds in the game drawn using a variety of art styles (one in the style of Van Gogh, for example), as well as a trailer showing what we can expect Mario to look like in high definition.
One particular feature that was also confirmed today is the ability to play with your Mii in game. In an Iwata Asks interview posted by Nintendo today they explained that this wasn’t possible on the Wii because of the low definition of the Wii’s output and the consequent confusion between players who couldn’t tell their Mii characters apart from one another. The high definition output of the Wii U fixes this so now you can have four different players playing with four different Mii characters on screen at once.
In addition to four players controlling characters, one player can also participate as a helper using the Wii U GamePad. By tapping on the pad’s screen you can add blocks to the level, stun enemies or perform other useful actions.
