We never really expected Aliens: Colonial Marines to launch in 2012, what with Gearbox Software’s focus on wrapping up Borderlands 2 ahead of its September release, but it would have been nice to once again fight toe-to-toe with those wretched Xenomorphs in a new videogame adaptation of the Alien franchise.
To dash our hopes, Aliens: Colonial Marines for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC has been given a worldwide release date of February 12th 2013, but to keep us keen until then, SEGA and Gearbox have sent out a groping, gory and sweary new trailer for the game:
Aliens: Colonial Marines – Release Date Trailer
If you’ve not yet heard about it, Aliens: Colonial Marines is a singleplayer, co-operative and competitive multiplayer game set in the filthy and futuristic ‘Alien’ franchise, and according to SEGA, will bring “new levels of bone-chilling suspense and adrenaline-filled action” to this world.
Cast as a leader of a group of highly trained United States Colonial Marines, you and your crew will be tasked with boarding the gigantic space-faring USS Sulaco cargo ship, thought to be abandoned, and getting to the bottom of what happened in the vessel.
“They will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe,” says SEGA. Very dramatic!
Expect all of the things that you know and love in the Alien franchise to be included in Aliens: Colonial Marines, including authentic environments (such as the surface of LV-426 and Hadley’s Hope) and weapons, as well as those iconic (and creepy) sound effects.
President of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford said of the game’s release date announcement:
“I am thrilled to announce the definitive launch date for Aliens: Colonial Marines. Aliens: Colonial Marines is the culmination of a life-time of inspiration from the films and relentless passion and drive from the exceptionally talented development team behind the scenes.”
While the singleplayer portion of the game is sure to be fantastic and intense, what about the multiplayer? SEGA explains:
“Providing for an innovative asymmetrical competitive multiplayer experience, Aliens: Colonial Marines lets players fight in first person as the ultimate combatants – the United States Colonial Marines, or in third person as the universe’s deadliest killers – the Xenomorphs.
“Plunging into familiar and new environments from the iconic film franchise, players will have to fight the fear and face the true horrors of the ALIENS universe.”
