While Sony has dropped a couple of teasers for Soul Sacrifice during the last few weeks, the game’s full unveiling took place today at a press conference held in central Tokyo. Many people had speculated that this PS Vita exclusive would be tied to Demon’s Souls due to SCE Japan Studio’s involvement in the project but it turns out that this is not the case. In fact Soul Sacrifice is the brainchild of Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune and is being developed by Marvelous AQL.
The game supports four-player local and online co-op and is due out in Japan at the end of the year. Early concept art, screenshots and details on the Soul Sacrifice official website suggest that the game will take place in an oppressive fantasy setting and will feature action-orientated gameplay with deep customisation elements.
The basic premise of Soul Sacrifice is that your journey begins in a jail cell where you discover a magical book that contains the journal of a sorcerer. By reading this book you effectively become the sorcerer and are transported to a twisted, monster-filled world that was borne from unchecked human desire.
The ‘sacrifice’ in Soul Sacrifice refers to how your character can use powerful magic by sacrificing a part of himself. For instance, in the trailer below you see him pulling out his spine to create a spectacularly fearsome sword. It’s not yet clear if these forfeited body parts will regenerate or can be earned back somehow, but this unique gameplay mechanic seems to fit perfectly with the dark atmosphere that permeates the game’s visual style.
