News of the game may have slipped out last week, but THQ and developer Relic Entertainment have today formally announced Company of Heroes 2, the sequel to what the pair call “the highest rated strategy game of all-time.”
Releasing in early 2013 for PC, Company of Heroes 2 will take players to the Eastern Front during World War II, putting you in control of the Soviet Red Army during some of the most devastating (and important) battles of 1941 on the front lines of Russia.
This is in stark contrast to the original Company of Heroes strategy title, which focussed on the Western Front, and will this time task you with defending Moscow from the invading Nazi army while dealing with the harsh realities of the Russian Winter.
Relic will debut the latest iteration of its Essence Engine, version 3.0, to bring the world of Company of Heroes 2 to life, providing new levels of environmental destruction, ‘Dynamic Battle Tactics’ as well as the expected visual overhaul, while new ‘Commander Abilities’ are also promised.
Producer at Relic Entertainment Greg Wilson said of Company of Heroes 2:
“Company of Heroes 2 is a true successor, introducing a new front, new protagonists and new technology while retaining the unique mix of strategic gameplay and competitive multiplayer that made the original Company of Heroes such a success.”
In addition, executive Vice President of Core Games Danny Bilson promised that Company of Heroes 2 will be supported by “a strong post-launch digital content plan that enhances and expands the product’s lifecycle.”
Here’s the story setup for Company of Heroes 2:
“It is 1941 and the beginning of what will become the most brutal conflict of World War II, as Germany launches a full-scale invasion of the frozen tundra of the Soviet Union which would result in over 14 million military casualties.
“Engage in visceral tactical combat that will define you as a military leader and challenge you to wield the might of the Soviet Empire as you smash your way to Berlin.”
Look forward to it in 2013 – more media for Company of Heroes 2 will no doubt arrive at E3 2012 and in the lead up to the show.
