The constant reports and speculation floating around this past week ruined the surprise, but Sony Computer Entertainment and SuperBot Entertainment have formally announced PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale for PlayStation 3 – “a celebration of a storied history of great characters and rich worlds brought together in one game.”
PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale is billed as a four-player brawling game similar in style to something like Super Smash Bros, the biggest difference here being that it features iconic characters from the PlayStation library of games.
So far, we’ve been able to see classic characters like Kratos (God of War), Parappa (Parappa the Rapper), Sly (Sly Raccoon), Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal), the princess from Fat Princess and Colonel Radec (Killzone), with levels themed after games such as LittleBigPlanet, Buzz, Patapon and God of War.
Launching this ‘Holiday’ for PS3, PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale will focus on online play and include “a robust tournament mode” but will also feature both singleplayer and multiplayer modes, with co-operative play also promised.
More information on PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale is expected at E3 this June, with announcements of new characters (and third-party personalities), features and levels.
Here’s Game Director at SuperBot Entertainment, Omar Kendall, speaking about the studio’s approach to the creation of PlayStation-All Stars: Battle Royale:
“With PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale, we set out to make an experience accessible enough for all PlayStation fans to enjoy while also creating something deep enough for the serious fighting game aficionado. We think this ‘accessible yet deep’ strategy is the perfect way to bring PlayStation fans of all stripes together.”
You can see Kendall talking about the game in a video interview, as well as two great gameplay video snippets, below:
