The internet is abuzz after Sony announced God of War: Ascension earlier today and released the first spectacular trailer for the game. Since then new details about God of War: Ascension have emerged, including a possible release window.

The first interesting detail about God of War: Ascension is that it’s being directed by Todd Papy, who served as design director on God of War III. Stig Asmussen did a fantastic job directing that game and apparently he’s still with Sony, so I can only think that Santa Monica Studio has another major title up its sleeve. This would be a similar case to how Naughty Dog kept The Last of Us under wraps when everyone thought all the staff at the studio were focussed on developing Uncharted 3.

Other new God of War: Ascension details have emerged from Sony’s official product page for the game. This website lists the following information:

  • Genre: Action, Adventure
  • Available Platform: PS3
  • Release Date: Spring 2013
  • Players: 1
  • Max Online Players: 0
  • 3D Compatible: No

God of War III was released in March 2010 so a Spring 2013 release date for God of War: Ascension sounds about right. This would mean that Santa Monica Studio has three full years to work on the game.

The product page suggests that God of War: Ascension will be singleplayer only and won’t have 3D support. This may come as a disappointment to some but it’s important to remember that these details could change at any point prior to the game’s release.

God of War: Ascension’s director also teased a reveal of further details about the game at the end of April, and suggested that we may even see first gameplay footage at that time. Todd Papy wrote:

“Be sure to tune in to PlayStation.Blog and God of War: Ascension on Facebook on Monday, April 30th at 8am Pacific Time for a live streaming event that will give you a glimpse of what’s in store for God of War: Ascension.”

We can’t wait to bring you more news on the latest entry in the equally brutal and epic God of War franchise!
