Right, we’ve been turning a blind eye to this for long enough but the rumours and speculation have been whipping against the bow of SS El33t for far too long now – with E3 2012 (basically) just around the corner and an announcement due soon, we’re going to jump aboard this Black Ops 2 vessel and test its seaworthiness.
Avast! Prepare to be boarded, ye scoundrels!
Kotaku has come into possession of an interesting artefact in the form of a promotional poster sent to them by a US retailer. The flier promotes a date – May 2nd 2012 – with the tagline ‘Return For Debriefing.’
Also on the poster are the logos for Treyarch and Activision – notably, Treyarch’s logo appears ahead of Activision, the publisher, which is highly unusual other than in the case of a more dominant developer.
So with no visible mention of Black Ops 2, why do we think it’s a poster for the sequel to the 2010 Call of Duty game?
For one thing, Treyarch developed that 2010 game, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and it would make sense for the studio to create the follow-up. Also, the story and theme of Black Ops involved a global conspiracy centred around the knowledge and numbers known by a single man – a man who had been ‘briefed’ and was subsequently being tortured to release the information.
The faded imagery of a man holding a gun in the background is also very reminiscent of that used in the promotion of the original Black Ops.
So taking this poster into consideration, we can expect to hear more about Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on May 2nd – early next month – with a trickle and tumble of news heading our way until a giant splash at E3 this year.
What say you?
H33rsay is El33tonline’s round-up of game industry rumours and speculation where we have looks at unconfirmed and unannounced pieces of news emerging from anonymous tipsters, information leaks and generally dubious sources. It may not all be true, but it’s still fun to talk about!
