If you were to ask the casual person on the street what the biggest gaming franchise in the world is at the moment, what do you think they would say? Mario? Dig a little deeper and you might start to hear names like ‘Call of Duty,’ or ‘Grand Theft Auto’ or even ‘Assassin’s Creed.’
What about platform exclusive gaming franchises? What do you think a hardcore gamer would tell you then? If you were to ask Xbox director for global marketing, Steve Beinner, what the biggest platform exclusive game franchise is at the moment, the answer would be clear.
Speaking to MCVUK recently about the return of protagonist Master Chief in the upcoming Halo 4, Beinner said:
“Bringing Master Chief back is huge. Honestly, there’s not many franchises that have done what Halo has. There’s not many that have broken through and sold that much. You named two of them, GTA and Call of Duty. But if you look at platform exclusives, nothing is bigger than Halo.”
During the interview, producer on Halo 4 Kiki Wolfkill chimed in:
“Halo has missed Master Chief a little bit. And that’s not to take anything away from the games that were off the main line. But we’ve built so much equity in Chief and really such a strong icon in Chief, that I do think people missed a little bit not being able to see what he was doing next. He is such a strong focal point.”
Do you agree? Is Halo the biggest platform exclusive franchise? How does it measure up to multi-platform franchises like Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto? Does Halo 4 have a hope of challenging these games for dominance when it’s released later this year?
