During Sony’s Tokyo Game Show 2011 press conference today, the company has announced a raft of new details regarding its upcoming handheld, the PS Vita, including expected battery life, the Japanese launch line-up of game, official pricing and availability options: and a release date in Japan.

PlayStation Vita

Let’s start with the good goods: PS Vita will release on December 17th in Japan and will retail for ¥24,980 for the WiFi only version of the device, and 29,800 for the 3G only version.

The handheld will initially become available in a ‘Crystal Black’ colour, with three bundles. Here they are:

  • For ¥24,980, the base model PS Vita system with WiFi will simply include a USB cable, AC adapter, power cord and manuals

  • For ¥29,980, the ‘limited edition’ version of the PS Vita will include the 3G and WiFi systems, as well as a USB cable, AC adapter, power cord, manuals and a SIM card with a reported 20 hours of pre-paid 3G connectivity.

  • For ¥29,980, the ‘first run’ edition of the PS Vita (only 500 000 units made) will include the 3G and WiFi systems, as well as a USB cable, AC adapter, power cord, manuals and a SIM card with a reported 100 hours of pre-paid 3G connectivity.

Keep in mind, these bundles are for Japan, and thanks to Sony’s partnership deal with Japanese service provider NTT DoCoMo, gamers in the country will be able to buy pre-paid 3G cards for 30 and 100 hours of connectivity time, priced between ¥980 and ¥4 980 respectively.

A few new hardware details also cropped up, with the reveal that the PS Vita’s battery is expected to allow for between three and five hours of game play time with one charge, as long as you’re not using Bluetooth or any of the network features.

Five hours of video playback and nine hours of music playback (while in standby mode) is also promised. Additionally, it’ll take approximately two hours and forty minutes to charge the system’s battery from empty to full.
