If you’ve been a PlayStation fanatic since the very beginning, you’ll know that WipEout was a launch title for the PS1 way back in September 1995. It had the honour of being the first non-Japanese game released for the system, and over time became iconic of the bold new direction consoles were heading in. It even featured briefly in the film Hackers, and was the very definition of cool to the disaffected youth in that particular scenario.
It’s therefore of sentimental significance that Sony’s shiny new handheld – NGP – should be graced with another WipEout title.
WipEout 2048 looks like it will include all the content of WipEout HD Fury on PS3 and add 10 new tracks, 20 new ships, as well as new game modes and weapons to the equation. You’ll also have several new ways of playing the futuristic racer, including tilt controls using the NGP’s built-in six axis sensor.
Most exciting of all is the game’s cross-play functionality with PS3. This allows you to play online multiplayer on your NGP with WipEout HD Fury PS3 players, and a total of eight players using either console can race together.
This is the first time (to my knowledge) that home and portable consoles have been able to interact in this way, and this cutting-edge experience will hopefully be a feature of many more NGP/PS3 titles moving forward.
It will interesting to see if NGP players using 3G to connect to online multiplayer experience more lag than their WiFi counterparts, because latency is typically higher on wireless broadband.
Have a look at these WipEout 2048 screenshots to see how closely the graphics resemble WipEout HD Fury, and the two PlayStation Blog videos below are essential viewing if you’re eager to learn more about the game.
You can expect lots of new WipEout 2048 details to surface at E3, including a release date which will hopefully coincide with the NGP’s launch.
