Gearbox has just dropped a super surprise announcement and revealed that its much talked about shooter set in the ‘Alien’ universe is indeed still alive and kicking, and will make a showing at E3 2011 next week.
Additionally, Gearbox has announced that the game will launch in the ‘Spring’ of 2012.
What’s the game? Aliens: Colonial Marines!
Currently in the works at Gearbox Software, and to be published by SEGA, Aliens: Colonial Marines has been ‘missing in action’ ever since it was first rumoured into existence, and then confirmed to be in development at the Brothers in Arms/Borderlands studio. Now that Duke Nukem Forever is done, dusted and gold, it’s time to talk about the team’s next game.
Aliens: Colonial Marines is said to bring “new levels of bone-chilling suspense and adrenaline-filled action to the renowned franchise,” and you’ll be up against the deadly and ghastly Xenomorph aliens as depicted in the films ‒ “the universe’s ultimate alien killing machines.”
Claustrophobic environments and blood curdling thrills are also promised, which are the best kind of both of these things.
Here’s a story blurb for Aliens: Colonial Marines:
“Aliens: Colonial Marines begins with an ostensibly abandoned ship, the U.S.S. Sulaco, recovered in orbit around LV-426. Players lead a group of highly trained United States Colonial Marines as they board the deserted craft to uncover the fate of the crew.
“They will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe. Aliens: Colonial Marines features authentic environments, such as the surface of LV-426 and Hadley’s Hope, weapons inspired by the film series and is designed to provide an exhilarating and engaging new chapter in the Aliens universe.”
President of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford enthused:
“To Gearbox Software and its peers throughout the industry, Aliens is one of the most influential science fiction properties of all time,” said Randy Pitchford,. “Aliens: Colonial Marines, designed as an interactive successor to the landmark films from 20th Century Fox and Directors Ridley Scott and James Cameron, is a dream project to which our studio is deeply committed and passionate about.”
