Disney Interactive Studios recently announced that you’ll soon be able to slip into the skins of your favourite Disney and Pixar characters in an upcoming multiplayer action adventure game known as Disney Universe.
Primarily aimed at a younger audience (and the young at heart), Disney Universe will allow players to suit up as one of over 40 characters from Disney properties, including Mike (Monsters Inc.), TRON (TRON: Legacy), Alice (Alice in Wonderland), Stitch (Lilo & Stitch) and others, while taking part in challenges spread across six different Disney-themed worlds.
Every costume available in Disney Universe will imbue players with a unique ability specific to that character ‒ the more you use that character and, subsequently, that unique ability, the better and more powerful they both become.
Four-player multiplayer is said to feature in the game, and you’ll all be challenged to “defeat enemies, collect coins and power-ups, unlock new costumes and explore: worlds inspired by numerous Disney and Disney Pixar films.”
Senior vice president of publishing at Disney Interactive Media Group, Adam Sussman, said of Disney Universe:
“Disney Universe is a vast treasure chest of Disney properties with memorable characters, places and experiences that gamers, as well as Disney fans will enjoy. The fast-paced, frenetic gameplay combined with wacky humor and hilarious situations make Disney Universe the perfect game to play with family and friends.”
Somewhat dubiously, Disney Interactive promises that “The fun will continue on with plans for Disney Universe to be an expanding universe post-launch with items for download and new content available. Additional worlds, costumes, and more will be available for purchase, giving Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 system owners an ever-evolving gameplay experience.”
Hopefully Disney Interactive does ‘The Right Thing’ with this downloadable content and provides real value for our money, rather than releasing what is essentially a ‘skeleton’ of Disney Universe and requiring gamers to pay to flesh it out.
Disney Universe is currently in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC and the Mac, and is slated for a ‘Fall’ (end of year) release.
