In the last 24 hours, two fairly significant pieces of rumoured information have emerged in the world of videogames, both of which are near and dear to many a gamer’s heart: The next Call of Duty, and the upcoming Dashboard update for Xbox 360.

Let’s rummage around in some half-truths and indulge in some whole lies for a while, shall we?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 dated and detailed

First up, some intriguing ‘news’ items have emerged regarding the next Call of Duty title from Activision and Infinity Ward, formally mentioned in the publisher’s recent earnings call.

According to reports, the game is codenamed ‘Call of Duty: Project Colossus,’ widely believed to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and currently in development at both Call of Duty franchise originator Infinity Ward, as well as new Activision studio Sledgehammer. Other internal Activision developers, including Raven, are said to be developing multiplayer maps for this next game.

Additionally, and according to a listing at UK retailer Tesco, Call of Duty: Project Colossus will launch this year on November 8th, but retailers have been (very) wrong before.

Sources have spilled the beans on the supposed focus and gameplay of Project Colossus, and speaking to Kotaku, these mysterious figures have said that the game will feature larger, epic scale and destructable environments, bringing to mind the Battlefield series of games.

The story of the Project Colossus could also involve a World War III-like scenario, as various countries are pulled into a global conflict following the events of CoD: Modern Warfare 2. The tale will also weave in chief Call of Duty protagonists Captain John ‘Soap’ MacTavish and Captain John Price.

We’ll find out a whole lot more in the coming weeks, and at E3 in early June.

Next Xbox 360 Dashboard update detailed, launching this month

A source has revealed to consumer site Joystiq that Microsoft will be launching the next Xbox 360 Dashboard update on May 19th, with six different updates rolling out until May 30th to complete the update.

What’s said to be included in the next update? Aside from support for the new Xbox 360 disc format, PayPal support will be added to Xbox 360 for extra online payment options.

Additionally, Avatar Kinect will become available on May 27th as a separate download.
