The Need for Speed franchise has been very active of late, with two new games in the series being released in the last six months ‒ Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and SHIFT 2 Unleashed. EA is clearly keen to utilise the Need For Speed name while it’s still resonant in gamers’ minds judging by yesterday’s confirmation of a brand new title in the franchise.
Need For Speed: The Run is pegged for a November 18th release in Europe and a November 15th launch in North America, across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii and 3DS platforms.
The teaser trailer below seems to point to a more story-driven experience than previous Need For Speed titles. The trailer also indicates that the game will take place in several well-known cities in North America, such as New York and San Francisco. Whether or not Need For Speed: The Run will return to the open-world gameplay of NFS: Underground and NFS: Undercover is an interesting unknown at this point.
Need For Speed: The Run is being developed by EA Black Box (and uses the “the groundbreaking Frostbite 2 engine” seen in Battlefield: Bad Company 2), which is the Canadian-based studio responsible for a string of recent Need for Speed games, as well as the Skate series.
Here’s an official description from EA regarding Need For Speed: The Run:
“It’s called The Run. An illicit, high-stakes race across the country. The only way to get your life back is to be the first from San Francisco to New York. No speed limits. No rules. No allies. All you have are your driving skills and sheer determination as you battle hundreds of the world’s most notorious drivers on the country’s most dangerous roads.”
