El33tonline's 3DS and DS Buyer's Guide for Holiday 2011Written by Peter on Thursday 15 Dec 2011With the Nintendo DS library winding up there’s only a few recent games to recommend, so I’ve combined the DS and 3DS buyer’s guide. If you only own a 3DS don’t forget that you have access to the massive DS library! Other than the games mentioned here I don’t think the 3DS has built up enough must-have titles to warrant a list for it so I’ve only listed some must-have DS titles. What’s better than one pink ball of fun? 10! Guide 10 mini-Kirby’s as they try to become one again. Nintendo use Kirby for yet another ingenious gameplay experiment with great results.
With the next Layton game destined for 3DS this is your last chance to play a Layton game on the DS. It follows the same formula – impressive production values, great puzzles and an interesting story. You know what you’re getting with Layton games, but they haven’t let me down yet.
Not much need be said. This is the best version of the classic pocket monster collection game I’ve played.
Superb Mario platforming game that is at the same time fresh and familiar. It’s hard to believe it was built in less that 18 months considering how much different content is crammed in. Nintendo Tokyo have made great use of the 3D features of the handheld.
Silky smooth racing and great online play – it’s another familiar yet fresh game. Especially familiarly infuriating is the sound of a blue shell coming to take away your lead.
The 3DS is a great portable fighting game machine because the circle pad works so well for doing quarter circles and the hardware is powerful enough to run the games at 60 frames per second (if you turn the 3D off). Dead or Alive: Dimensions is also good but this one beats it simply because I prefer Street Fighter old school style.
Yes, it’s the easiest Mario game ever made but that doesn’t mean it’s not a whole lot of fun, especially when trying to collect all those gold coins.
The best of the Castlevania games on the DS, although they’re all fantastic. They’re a genre all to themselves these days – an exploring, collecting, boss-fighting, vampire-themed 2D action game with RPG elements.
You can get these games on other platforms these days but they’re still must-have DS games. They’re interactive novels but the writing and the characters make them far more enjoyable than that sounds.
Beautiful sprite artwork, hilarious scenarios and dialogue, fun timing-based battles and a perfectly paced story combine to make what is arguably the best RPG on the DS.
