If you have a Tetris-shaped whole in your 3DS library then this game will fit it perfectly. It’s a high-quality Tetris game with lots of modes, robust online play and eight player local wireless play with a single cart. It doesn’t have the great puzzle modes that Tetris DS had or the fun Nintendo mascot stylings, but it does have a varied selection of modes including local download play and, of course, 3D eye-candy. Tetris gameplay hasn’t changed since the DS game. Pieces made out of four blocks fall down from the top and you move them left and right and drop them, trying to make lines. You can store a piece for later using the shoulder buttons, and you can see up to five pieces in the future. As you play the pieces fall faster and faster until they’re hitting the ground instantaneously. Fortunately you still have a bit of time to spin them around a few times so it never gets impossible. In fact in the DS this was a failing of the game – you could play it for hours and not die, the only thing stopping you was the need to eat or drink. I haven’t tried that in the 3DS game, but it is a little more difficult because you can’t spin a block around endlessly – you only get about 10 or so spins before it places it where it is and moves on to the next block. Even so the Marathon mode is designed to end at 150 lines, a sensible number. |
