Let’s face it, there’s not that many people breathing on planet Earth today who don’t know the words to at least one ABBA song. Apart from many of us growing up during the seventies and eighties era when “Waterloo” was more often than not heard blasting over the airwaves, an ABBA revival led by the outrageously popular musical stage show and later feature film ‘Mamma Mia’ served to teach the lyrics of ABBA to another generation.

Perhaps it was this revival that inspired Sony to release a music game dedicated to the music of this Swedish pop band, who incidentally got their name from the acronym formed from the first letters of the four members of the band. The tracklist for SingStar ABBA is 100% ABBA, including 25 tracks from the band, 5 of which are exclusive to the PS3 version.

Overall there is a great selection of ABBA hits, including ‘Dancing Queen,’ ‘Waterloo,’ ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Money, Money, Money.’ But it doesn’t end there, and let me once again remind you that the entire tracklist is ABBA songs, so if you enjoy ABBA you will enjoy this game, but if you don’t stay away.

If you have ever been a fan of ABBA (even if you don’t like to admit it to your friends), you will find yourself cracking a smile when you sing along to the first ABBA track you select and memories of your youth will probably come flooding back to you. The dodgy music videos, characteristic of the majority of music videos filmed during the 70s and 80s, are bound to give you all a bit of a giggle too.

Let me give a quick refresher course to those of you who are new to this whole SingStar thing. After you have selected a song, try to keep your voice in line with the on-screen prompts as the game measures the pitch of your voice and scores you against the note the real artist is singing. You get points for singing in tune, singing phrases in tune and hitting the oft times elusive golden notes.

The game includes the classic SingStar game modes so you can sing solo or team up with a couple of friends and have some fun in Battle, Medley, Duet, or Pass the Mic modes. You can also record your performances using the PlayStation Eye and upload them to the SingStore, if you think you have what it takes, and download more songs online which definitely adds to the replayability factor.

If you have ever listened to ABBA on the radio growing up (or even worse, your parents loved the band and owned all the CDS) SingStar ABBA is great for a trip down memory lane. It’s also great for the younger generation to familiarize themselves with a popular band of the seventies. But if you are not a fan of ABBA and find yourself cringing when you hear the lyrics to ‘Dancing Queen,’ you might want to stay clear of this particular SingStar title and instead indulge in the tracklist of SingStar Pop Edition which boasts a great selection of the latest hit songs.
