Over the course of the Game Developers Conference during the tail-end of March this year, news of the cloud-computing gaming service, OnLive, sadly overshadowed the official unveiling of the Zeebo console, a gaming device that plugs directly into your TV and operates on a completely wireless distribution network, implementing traditional cellphone technologies for communication online.
The Zeebo console, aimed primarily at third-world and emerging first-world markets, comes pre-loaded with three games, namely Need for Speed Carbon, Fifa 2009 and Brain Challenge.
Additional games, Quake 1, Quake II and Prey Evil, are also available for free via download, while more games are planned to become available for purchase and download soon. All of the games are localised in Portugese.
It was announced yesterday, though, that Zeebo has officially been launched in its first test market, Brazil, at a cost of $249, which is estimated to be a third of the amount Brazilians can expect to pay for a traditional videogame console.
CEO of Tectoy, Fernando Fischer, who is handling marketing and distribution of Zeebo in Brazil, said of the launch:
