SEGA has today announced that Western PlayStation 3 gamers can start getting excited for the release of a Yakuza 4 demo this month! The contents of the demo have been detailed, while a trailer focussing on the ‘hostesses’ in Yakuza 4 has also been released - an element that was removed from the Western release of Yakuza 3.

Not only will a version of SEGA’s long-running Yakuza franchise appear on the PSP in the form of Yakuza: New Chapter Black Panther (roughly translated) at some time in the future, but a new PlayStation 3 iteration of Yakuza is also currently in development at the Yakuza team.

Delay your joy-squealing for just a second, Yakuza fans. There’s more.

Despite the fact that there is a chance this new game isn’t Yakuza 5, the game won’t feature series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu in the title role, as Goro Majima (pictured), a notorious gangster in the Yakuza franchise, will take that responsibility this time around.

Commence squeals of joy.

Speaking to Japanese games magazine Famitsu, SEGA’s Toshihiro Nagoshi confirmed the news:

Yakuza 4 LogoSEGA has made the dreams of Western Yakuza fans come true, as the publisher just announced that open-world action adventure game Yakuza 4 will be releasing in the West in the Spring of 2011, exclusively on the PlayStation 3, following its successful launch in Japan earlier this year.

When is a game not a game?

This is the question I had running through my mind while playing Yakuza 3, from the second I started watching the hour-long recap videos (to tell the story of Yakuza and Yakuza 2), to the minute I began watching the first introductory video of Yakuza 3 proper, to the first time I got to control protagonist Kazuma Kiryu… and was greeted with in-game text to button my way through, and more intricate backstory to absorb.

While the story is very interesting and expertly delivered in cinematic form, and the open world (as well as instanced and closed) environments are extraordinarily realistic in appearance, I had a hard time enjoying the ‘game’ part of Yakuza 3, as it’s delivered in such a segmented, compartmentalised fashion that, in the end, it feels as though the story is the ‘real’ Yakuza 3, while the interactive sections are merely mini-games, put in place to keep you interested long enough to link up with the next cinematic – something that may be true of most games, but is painfully apparent in this one.

SEGA’s upcoming Yakuza 3 has been a long time coming, and, in fact, up until December 2009 we didn’t know if it would ever come out after the not-too-grand reception (in terms of sales) the first two games had in the West. This isn’t surprising – Yakuza is a game series centered very much on Japanese culture.

Yakuza are to the Japanese as Mafia bosses are to the Sicilians. That’s my understanding, please correct me if I’m wrong – my Japanese culture knowledge is limited. In the demo you’re a tough guy named Kazuma Kiryu, the same main character from the previous Yakuza games, and you’ve just arrived back in Kamurocho, an area of a city (I think Tokyo) which must have the most neon-lights per-square-meter of anywhere in the world.

An incredible featurette trailer for the upcoming open-world Yakuza 4 action game from SEGA has been released, but it’s unfortunately all in Japanese…

Not to worry though, because non-Japanese speakers can still get a good feel for all of the new features in the game, including the improved combat system, the ability to learn moves and abilities from everyday citizens, the occasional need to chase down people who owe you money, and the chance to enter fighting cage matches.

Also on show are the incredibly dense environments with amazing attention to detail and tons of activities to partake in, the graphical improvements over previous Yakuza franchise entries, as well as some of the humour that’s been injected into the game.

Enjoy:
