When looking at the bi-weekly Xbox LIVE Activity charts from your friend and mine, Major Nelson, it’s important to keep in mind that these lists represent the most popular games played while connected to Xbox LIVE, and not necessarily played over Xbox LIVE, like a multiplayer game.
So with this information it shouldn’t be a surprise to find The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim appearing at number three in the list of most popular Xbox LIVE games this past week, behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops, and ahead of FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3.
Or maybe it should surprise you.
As the past year of 2011 slowly grows ever more distant in our memory now is a good time to cast our minds back to the Xbox’s version of 2011 and reflect on what titles made 2011 an ‘X’-tra special year for Xbox owners.
Without further ado, here are the top games for 2011 based on unique users connected to Xbox LIVE or the number of full versions purchased between January 1st, 2011 and December 31st, 2011.
There’s a new challenger to the Xbox LIVE Activity crown and it has appeared in the most unlikely of forms.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has become the third most played game over Xbox LIVE during the week of November 21st, slotting in behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at No. 1 and Call of Duty: Black Ops at No. 2.
Where does this leave Battlefield 3?
EA and DICE’s game is relegated to No. 4 this week ahead of FIFA 12, and interestingly following Modern Warfare 3’s release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has slipped down to No. 6.

While this week’s Xbox LIVE Activity ranking doesn’t include data for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (yet), it doesn’t matter because Activision’s previously released Call of Duty games still managed to run riot.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is still the number one most played game on Xbox LIVE, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has shifted down to third most popular game on the service. What’s in at second?
Battlefield 3. While EA’s game made progress from the week previous, being sandwiched in-between two Call of Duty titles isn’t a great place to be.
Find out where other popular titles (like Gears of War 3 and Halo: Reach) ended up in this past week’s activity chart, and also find out which are the best-selling Xbox LIVE Arcade and Indie titles, all below:
It’s business as usual at the top of the Xbox LIVE Activity Chart this week, as Call of Duty occupies No. 1 and No. 2 and Halo: Reach and FIFA Soccer 11 follow closely behind
But.
New to the listing this week is Madden NFL 12 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which appear in the mix with GTA IV, Gears of War 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
We’re counting the days until the release of Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in October and November respectively to inject some fresh blood at the top of the chart, but until then, let’s look at some other activity on Xbox LIVE.
There’s hardly a single change in the list of Top Twenty most played games over Xbox LIVE compared to the week previous, with only a bit of shuffling going on in the last five entries as Mortal Kombat is relegated to the bottom of the chart.
What about the top of the chart, you ask? Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are still bullying Halo: Reach, FIFA 11 and Grand Theft Auto IV, so it’s simply business as usual.
There has been a shake-up in the list of best-selling Xbox LIVE Arcade titles with the release of From Dust last week, as well as a few minor changes in the list of top-selling Xbox LIVE Indie games and the activity chart for Games For Windows LIVE.
But not much.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is as dominant as ever on the latest Xbox LIVE Activity chart, appearing at the top of the listing to remain the number one most played game on Xbox LIVE.
The rivalry between Black Ops and older sibling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 makes for a good fight, but Infinity Ward’s title has to settle for second place on the chart ahead of Halo: Reach, FIFA 11 and GTA IV.
As for the top-selling Xbox LIVE Arcade game, that’s another easy answer: Bastion is solidly number one on this listing following its release last week, ahead of Warhammer 40: Kill Team and Deadliest Warrior: Legends.
It’s time once again to pore over the latest Xbox LIVE Activity listing to see which games were played the most on Microsoft’s online service, while also discovering which downloadable games sold the most.
Chart compiler Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb has this week included the Gears of War 3 beta in the list of most played Xbox 360 titles, so it’s very interesting to see how that shook out, but of course Call of Duty: Black Ops simply can’t be beaten, and appears at No. 1.
Again.

Yeah, Call of Duty: Black Ops is once again the number one most played game on Xbox LIVE, followed in hot pursuit by CoD: Modern Warfare 2 and Halo: Reach.
This is not news.
What’s at least a little interesting is that Mortal Kombat has made it into the top ten most active games on the service. You know what else is interesting? Ubisoft’s downloadable title Outland was the best-selling title on Xbox LIVE Arcade last week, outselling the reduced-price Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.
It’s been a number of weeks since a new Xbox LIVE Activity chart has been released, but Xbox frontman Major Nelson has done due diligence and compiled an exhaustive list of the most played and best selling games on Xbox LIVE for the seven day period ending April 11th.
And wouldn’t you know it? Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are still sitting at the top of the ranking!
Another week, another period of absolute dominance for Call of Duty: Black Ops on Xbox LIVE’s online activity chart, once again remaining the most played game on the service ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Halo: Reach, FIFA 11 and NBA 2K11. Debut title Homefront is also in the mix…
As for best-selling games over Xbox LIVE Marketplace, Full House Poker slips ahead of Torchlight and Battle: Los Angeles on the Xbox LIVE Arcade circuit, while The Impossible Game once again makes it to the top of the Indie Game sales listing in front of Marksman: Long Range and Avatar Paintball.
Grand Theft Auto IV is still the most played game over Games For Windows LIVE, in case you were wondering.

Xbox frontman Major Nelson has once again released the latest Xbox LIVE Activity ranking, this time for the week beginning February 7th, and once again Activision and Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops is king of the chart, remaining the No. 1 most played game on Xbox LIVE.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 follows in behind, which in turn is followed by Halo: Reach, FIFA 11 and NBA 2K11. Best-selling Xbox LIVE Arcade games for this past week include Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, the recently released Stacking (yay!) and Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2.
Best-selling Xbox LIVE Indie games (or ‘games’) include Voice Changer 360, Bird Assassin and Toy Stunt Bike.

Xbox frontman Major Nelson has provided us with some very interesting data this day in the form of a new Xbox LIVE Activity chart… but this is no ordinary activity chart, no-sir!
This compiled listing looks at the launch week activity (the first seven days) of various titles on Xbox LIVE over the course of 2010. Only games release last year were included in the chart, and only the top games in each category made their respective lists.
Based on unique users worldwide in 2010, you can see the top most played games on Xbox LIVE, the best-selling Xbox LIVE Arcade games, and the best-selling Xbox LIVE Indie games, all within the first seven days of their respective availability:
For a portion of 2009 and most of 2010, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 dominated the Xbox LIVE Activity listing and was consistently, week after week, the most played game on Xbox 360 over the online service.
There were some glimmers of hope for other games, and Bungie’s Halo: Reach even managed to break the control that Infinity Ward’s game had over the chart by appearing at No. 1 for a number of weeks. Now, though, a new master has arrived on Xbox LIVE to continue the streak of supremacy.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is that game, and utter chart destruction is its… game.
Find out where Halo: Reach now sits on the chart, as well as see how the Xbox LIVE Arcade, Xbox Indie Games and Games for Windows LIVE listings looking:
While Xbox frontman Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb is usually the source for all things related to online activity on Xbox LIVE, and regularly provides lists of the most played games on the service worldwide, Xbox 360 South Africa has recently posted a very interesting list giving us a similar glimpse into the most popular games currently being played on Xbox LIVE, but instead of being a global list, this one is specific to the South Africa.
Not surprisingly, the South Africa Xbox LIVE service sees Call of Duty: Black Ops top the activity ranking – the same result worldwide for the past week.
Where the lists differ, however, is at the second most popular game on the service, with Halo: Reach taking No. 2 as opposed to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the global listing.
Interestingly, the South African and global Xbox LIVE activity rankings are quite similar, save for minor position differences and a few newer games that aren’t accounted for:
