John RomeroWhen PC gamers of the 90’s think back there must surely be one name that’s synonymous with their digital leisure antics of the period: John Romero.

Not only did Romero co-found legendary development studio, id Software, and work on seminal titles such as Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and Quake, but good friend and fellow developer Tom Hall was there too (up until the beginning of DOOM II’s development), serving as id Software’s creative director, no less, and key contributor to the Commander Keen series that brought the team so much success in the first place.

After splitting up following their stints at id Software, rejoining at the ill-fated ION Storm, then joining up again at mobile developer Monkey Stone, then joining up again at Midway Austin, then parting ways again to try their respective hands at massively multiplayer online game development, John Romero and Tom Hall are once more working together in an official capacity at their new company, Loot Drop.

Yes, it’s true - the grand-daddy of the modern first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D, has made its way onto Xbox LIVE Arcade, available now for the sum of 400 MS Points. What’s it all about, then? From the post:

Achtung! You are OSA super agent B.J. Blazkowicz and you must escape from Castle Wolfenstein and defeat the twisted Nazi regime!

“Fight all of the memorable enemies from Hans Grosse to Mecha-Hitler in the legendary game that launched the First Person Shooter genre.

“Search classic levels for hidden secrets that reveal stolen Nazi treasure, health packs, ammo and weapons, or even short cuts.”

Ha, still sounds great! Get it now to relive some classic first-person shooting action!

 

The original Wolfenstein 3D will be available on Xbox Live Arcade on the 3rd of June and the PlayStation Network on the 4th of June.

This is the latest news from Activision and id Software, who also announced that gamers who accept the challenge of this first person action game will be awarded with gold for customizable weapon upgrades in id Software’s new Wolfenstein, scheduled to hit shelves on the 7th of August for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Wolfenstein 3D offers players the chance to try escape from Castle Wolfenstein again with classic enemies Hans Grosse and Mecha-Hitler challenging players in six episodes and 60 levels.
