Nintendo of America has announced that Wii Sports Resort and Wii Party will both receive price cuts across the US later this month.
During Nintendo’s recent press conference (where the company officially announced the release date for the 3DS), there was quick mention of something called the WiiMote Plus, a new peripheral for the Wii that combines both a regular WiiMote controller and the Wii Motion Plus add-on into one solid device.
No further details were forthcoming at the event, however, but now we’ve got some more official news to share with you regarding this ‘mysterious’ WiiMote Plus controller.
Pretty much everyone knows that if you buy a Wii anywhere in the world (except Japan), you’ll also receive a copy of Wii Sports in the bundle as well as a Wii Remote and Nunchuk.
Core Gaming (distributors of Nintendo in South Africa) have decided to make the deal even sweeter to celebrate the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicking off in South Africa this week. Now they’ll throw in a copy of Wii Sports Resort and a Wii MotionPlus too when you buy any white or black Wii.
According to the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) in the UK, there was absolutely no stopping Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (tell us something we don’t know) in 2009, not only in terms of pure software sales, but overall entertainment media as well, outselling chart-topping music albums and blockbuster movies to become the best performing piece of entertainment in the UK last year.
First, let’s look at the list of best selling videogames in the UK last year, according to ERA:
It’s official: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the best selling, biggest blockbuster of a game to release during 2009. All of those other times you were told Modern Warfare 2 was the biggest and best don’t count.
As part of an in-depth report published by GfK Chart Track on trade site MCV.co.uk, some interesting worldwide software sales figures for the top five videogames of 2009 have been revealed, with a breakdown by region (US, Japan and UK) also provided.
At number one, Modern Warfare reigns supreme with worldwide sales of 11.86 million units, while Wii Sports Resort dillydallies behind with 7.57 million units.
To find out who the other three are, and what the sales breakdown per region is, you need only casually roll your eyeballs a little further below:
According to worldwide life-to-date sales data released by Nintendo earlier today, three of the publisher’s titles, namely Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, have all surpassed 10 million units sold for the period of April 1st 2009 to December 31st 2009.
US sales tracking firm NPD has revealed that December 2009 has become the videogame industry’s best ever month in terms of sales in the US, generating $5.53 billion in console retail game market revenues – a 4% year-over-year increase from $5.32 billion in December of 2008.
The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) has published a list of the top twenty best-selling titles in the UK for 2009, and (surprise surprise) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is right at the top of the list, followed by another ‘shocking’ entry, Fifa 10, at number two.
Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and Wii Fit fill out the rest of 2009’s top five best-selling games in the UK, but where do popular titles such as Forza 3, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Resident Evil 5 show up? Head on down below for the answers.
For the second week in a row, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has taken perch atop Chart Track’s UK Software Sales Chart, fending off valiant advances from newcomers such as Left 4 Dead 2, Assassin’s Creed II and New Super Mario Bros. Wii in the process.
Sales of Modern Warfare 2 this past week dropped a massive 86% from its enormous launch week, which makes this chart topping feat all the more impressive.
Wii Sports Resort had a lot riding on its shoulders, not only was it the follow-up to the best selling game of all time Wii Sports, but it was the first of Nintendo’s titles to showcase the highly anticipated Wii MotionPlus accessory. Having seen the incredible precision introduced in first Grand Slam Tennis and then Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, I was interested to see if Nintendo could deliver a title that would live up to the hype.
So the big question really is how does the game shape up against the anticipation the publisher and game industry has created around it. I am happy to answer that in my humble opinion Wii Sports Resort is a resounding success. Nintendo has created another really fun title that gamers and non-gamers alike will enjoy.

Batman: Arkham Asylum debuts at number 1 on the UK’s All Formats Software Sales Chart, becoming Eidos’ biggest All Formats number 1 since ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ in 2000 and beating out Tomb Raider: Legend and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.
The Xbox 360 version of Batman’s latest adventures just pipped the PS3 version, with the former claiming 55% of the sales and the latter 45%. Watch this space to see how the PC version fairs when it hits shelves in a couple of weeks.
After a bit of a dominant streak by Ashes Cricket 2009, remaining at the top of the UK’s All Formats Software Sales chart for a number of weeks, the title of No. 1 on the chart has been passed on to Wii Sports Resort (sales down 12%), up to the top spot from No. 2 last week.
This means that last week’s debut title, Wolfenstein, has to remain content in sitting at No. 2 this week in its first week on sale, being outsold by Sports Resort by 2000 copies, although the first-person shooter did take the No. 1 spot in the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 sales chart.

Nintendo of America has announced that Wii Sports Resort has sold 500 000 copies in its first week on sale in the US. According to Nintendo’s internal tracking numbers, Wii Sports Resort reached this milestone from the game’s launch on the 26th of July to the 3rd of August.
“Through Monday we sold one copy of Wii Sports Resort roughly every 1.5 seconds continuously since it launched in the United States,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.
Wii Sports Resort keeps its spot at the top of the UK Software Sales Chart this week, with a sales increase of 6% helping it along.
Wii Fit makes another charge up the chart, placing itself at No. 2 this week from No. 4, while a host of EA games manage to chart at No. 3, 4 and 5, as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 remains at No. 3, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince moves down to No. 4 from No. 2 last week, and Fight Night Round 4 moves up from No. 6 to No. 5.
