In the year 2007, six months after the Wii came out, Nintendo released the first Mario Party for the console – Mario Party 8. We all expected another one the following year, and the year after that, based on our past experience of the series. But the Nintendo of this generation is not the same as the Nintendo of years gone by. Instead, they waited an unprecedented three years to bring out a sequel, and they dropped Mario out of it, distancing it from the Mario Party series in the process. I’m not sure it’s better for not starring Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom crew, but it’s definitely better for taking longer to come out. This is the most enjoyable Mario Party I’ve played – there’s less downtime (this being the most important thing), more polished mini-games, and much more variety.

It seems as if Nintendo can do no wrong when it comes to mini-game compilations. Wii Sports Resort is a case in point with sales currently standing at 16.4 million copies, but the list is pretty sizeable when you consider Wii Sports and Wii Play to mention but a few.

So you may be wondering if their next mini-game compilation, Wii Party, will follow in the same footsteps of success. It has already proved to be a success in Japan where it regularly tops the charts and is well on its way to the million mark, with sales now sitting at 736 000 copies in the three weeks since the title’s release in Japan. This would make it the 13th game on the Wii to reach the milestone according to tracking firm Media Create.
