WiiMote Plus Image 1 During Nintendo’s recent press conference (where the company officially announced the release date for the 3DS), there was quick mention of something called the WiiMote Plus, a new peripheral for the Wii that combines both a regular WiiMote controller and the Wii Motion Plus add-on into one solid device.

No further details were forthcoming at the event, however, but now we’ve got some more official news to share with you regarding this ‘mysterious’ WiiMote Plus controller.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 Box ArtEA has released an excellent looking launch trailer for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, which became available for the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 and iPhone across the US yesterday.

The next iteration of the publisher’s popular golfing sim includes the prestigious Ryder Cup golf tournament in-game and support for Sony’s PS3 motion controller and Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus. However, support for Microsoft’s upcoming Project Natal motion detection device for the Xbox 360 hasn’t been announced for the game yet.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 Box ArtEA has today announced a solid release date for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 (which will feature the prestigious Ryder Cup golf tournament in-game) while also revealing that the game will support Sony’s PS3 motion controller, in addition to the Wii MotionPlus for the Wii version.

In Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, players will be able to compete in The Ryder Cup by selecting a team from either the US or European squads and take part in a variety of competition formats to eventually (and hopefully) win the biennial event in-game.

Players will also be able to participate in a 24-person team-match online via Xbox 360 or PS3 and strategise with one another over Xbox LIVE or PlayStation Network.

Although only two Nintendo titles featured in the Top 10 software chart in June and despite Wii Play dropping out of the Top 10 for the first time in 29 months and the less than impressive sales of the Wii, the publisher still must have been happy with the Nintendo DS franchise which sold 766 000 units across the US in June, more than all the current generation consoles combined.

Wii MotionPlusThe NPD Group revealed that 424 000 DSi systems and 342 000 DS Lite systems were sold in June. The Wii sold 362 000 units in its 21st consecutive month as the top-selling home console in the US.

Perhaps most interesting was the number of Wii MotionPlus accessories sold during its launch month in the US. A total of 373 000 Wii MotionPlus accessories were sold, 169 000 Wii MotionPlus units were sold on their own, with 205 000 being packaged with EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10.

Nintendo have managed to keep pretty tight-lipped about their announcements at E3 this year. The only slip was the unearthing of an English Wii Fit Plus logo on the Japanese trademark database, suggesting a sequel to the popular Wii Fit will be revealed tonight. We also predicted that a new Mario game may be unveiled to appease the hardcore gamers who were disappointed by last year’s performance but let’s see what Nintendo had up their sleeves by taking a look at what happened at the Nintendo’s E3 Press Conference.

(Update: Now includes footage accompanying the announcements at the conference, including New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2.)

The event started with Nintendo’s executive vice president of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway taking the stage and discussing how videogames are becoming more and more popular. She promises to deliver both innovation and surprises during tonight’s show, before introducing us to a videogame character who has appeared in over 200 different titles. Cue the Mario retro video montage.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Dunaway continues, talking about how great Mario was in 3D but how Shigeru Miyamoto has been striving to move him into a new dimension, thinking for 15 years now about one new way to play a new Mario game. Apparently number four is the key. A logo for New Super Mario Bros. Wii is displayed on screen!
