Hot dang, the world of videogames has been shunted into 2012! The usually ‘quiet’ beginning period of the year has already seen a torrent of news and El33tonline has been keeping up the pace, with features of our own to complement the deluge.
And we’re only just getting started.
After a successful and highly enjoyable meeting of Durban gamers this past weekend, and ahead of another busy week with events in Johannesburg and Cape Town as well as another wave of game announcements, let’s catch up on the week of January 15th with El33tonline’s round-up of videogame news:
For the very first week of 2012, there was an inordinate amount of interesting news in the videogame world with full game announcements, at least one delay and a good collection of screenshots and trailers making their way out into the wild.
El33tonline did its part to inject some excitement into proceedings with a smattering of features and reviews, acting as the tiniest of tastes of things to come. The tiniest.
What were some of the most exciting and important things to happen in videogames this past week? Let’s take a look:
It’s an odd time in the cycle of the videogame industry, as far as news go. After coming off of a lull following the hysteria of E3 2011, excitement picked up again leading up to San Diego Comic Con a week ago with new reveals popping up left right and centre.
Now we head into a period of time leading up to gamescom 2011 where we can expect a few rumours and reports to emerge here and there, but most publishers and developers will be saving any knock-out news and reveals they have in store for this year’s show in Cologne, Germany.
There are things that remain constant in their presence, though: Great trailers and screenshots, with additional morsels of information peeking their way into the world to flesh out what we know about upcoming games.

Last week played host to the annual San Diego Comic-Con, so there was a ton of exciting new information to absorb, especially new morsels on comic book related games like Spider-Man and Batman, and fighting games like Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, Soul Calibur V and Street Fighter X Tekken.
The usual assortment of intriguing and astounding trailers and screenshots were also offered up to gamers around the world, and El33tonline posted a host of reviews and new competition information, while looking back at our time at gamescom 2010 as we ramp up for this year’s show in Cologne, Germany!

The post-E3 2011 dearth of excitement continues, but the team at El33tonline still managed to collect together more than enough interesting pieces of videogame news (including information on a shake-up at Sony, and Respawn Entertainment’s first game), fantastic reviews (for Alice: Madness Returns, amongst others), an in-depth preview (for the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta), and awesome trailers and images.

This week was all about recovering from the madness of E3 2011, mopping up announcements from the show, and reflecting on what was revealed and demonstrated.
There was a lot to reflect on.
Despite it being a pretty quiet week for tasty videogame news, a few interesting, exciting and sad pieces of information managed to escape into the world alongside awesome trailers, a number of El33tonline reviews and editorials, as well as the continuation of our ‘brain-teasing’ competitions.

It seemed as though there was a constant stream of stuff happening almost every minute this week in the videogame industry, but looking back over what actually happened… not a whole lot of it was all that earth shattering.
Although. We did get a final release date for arguably the most anticipated game of the year. And there was a bit of a sea change in South African game distribution circles. Loads of new screenshots and tons of amazing new gameplay videos were unleashed unto the ‘net, too. And we just caught wind of a countdown to the announcement of what will no doubt be this year’s most crushing game release…
So… maybe there was a bunch of earth shattering videogame news after all! And that’s not even the half of it!

Whoa! This week no less than three official game announcements were made, the development of at least two major game franchises was cancelled, a release date for a highly anticipated PlayStation Network game was revealed, and we posted up a collection of excellent PlayStation 3-exclusive previews! If we do say so ourselves!
And we got the usual assortment of jaw-dropping screenshots and trailers?!

This week saw a constant stream of interesting and/or exciting videogame news and announcements, and while there wasn’t any single massive reveal as in previous weeks like with the 3DS and NGP/PSP 2, a lack of megaton news was more than made up for with information coming from the PlayStation Experience in London, new details on Dark Souls, release date data, the official reveal of Battlefield 3, and the usual deluge of awesome trailers and screenshots.

This past week was pretty dang crazy as far as videogame news is concerned – loads of release dates and announcements emerged, an assortment of gob-stopping trailers were unleashed, some depressing news did the rounds, and we got further glimpses at upcoming games with batches of amazing screenshots.

What about the week that was? We’ve picked out a number of highlights for you to peruse below:
The biggest news this week by far was the US release of Kinect, Microsoft’s controller-free gaming device for Xbox 360.
Make no mistake, this launch was enormous, and as part of Microsoft’s marketing drive to spread the word of Kinect, massive advertising banners were erected in Times Square, New York City, while at the midnight launch event for the device, the publisher threw a crazy street party.
To recognise the launch of Kinect in the US, El33tonline was happy to let you know what we think about the top games available for the device, while also asking you if you’re going to be investing in Kinect when it’s available on November 10th in Europe, the UK and South Africa.
Other than Kinect, it was a relatively quiet news week, save for a few interesting industry happenings, as well as the release of the usual assortment of excellent gameplay trailers and videos. Also, we posted up a handful of reviews, while also announcing two exciting competitions for our South African readers to get in on.
