Last week Sony announced that the PS3 would soon be getting a new system software update. Version 2.20 is now live and Sony has detailed the update further.

The new firmware delivers BD-Live interactive film features, enabling PS3 owners to download video content, ringtones and interactive movie-based games, as well as the ability to copy photo and music playlists on a PS3 to a PSP. The update also allows DivX and WMV format videos to be played.

PR Manager for SCEA, Al De Leon, commented “Also, to set the record straight, Blu-ray Portable Copy was never a part of this firmware update, and the feature isn’t related to BD-LIVE. We know a lot of you are excited about the ability to take a copy of a BD movie with you on the go on your PSP, so we’ll keep you posted on any developments with this cool feature in the future.”

SCEE today announced that system software update version 2.20 for the PS3 will be released in late March. It will add Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 (known as BD-Live) and enable photo and music playlists on a PS3 to be copied to a PSP.

Promising to deliver “the ultimate interactive film experience,” BD-Live enables PS3 owners to take full advantage of interactive features including downloadable video content, ringtones and games.

You will need an internet connection and a minimum of 1GB local storage to access Blu-ray Profile 2.0. In addition movies with BD-Live are scheduled to be released next month.

BD-Live enables PS3 owners to access various features, depending on each title. These features include downloadable content (such as bonus scenes, shorts, trailers, subtitles, ringtones that can be sent to mobile phones and images) and interactive movie-based games that mean players from around the world can play against each other online or simply compete against other players in the same room.
