Every year, bookies place bets on which videogame will take the top spot on Chart Track’s UK Software Sales chart over the Christmas period (people will bet on anything), and in past years, a FIFA football title from EA Sports or a Call of Duty game from Activision have always been the firm favourites.

Could the bookies have predicated that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would have occupied the top slot for two weeks in a row to authoritatively become the Christmas No. 1 in 2011?

After four weeks of domination, Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing has been rescued from the reign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but we now have a new master to answer to.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is that master, and thanks to a price reduction in the region and a sales increase of 145%, Bethesda’s epic action RPG has climbed to the top of the UK’s software chart, up from No. 5 last week.

Despite the release of some of 2011’s most anticipated games across all platforms, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was still able to top Chart Track’s UK Software Sales listing this past week, even with an 87% drop in sales compared to the week previous.

A whopping nine new games entered Chart Track’s Top 40 this week, and five of those managed a Top Ten placement, while eight of these new titles slipped into the Top Twenty.
