[Modern Warfare 2 Update No. 1]

While you’re waiting for the PS3 patch to download, why not read El33tonline’s write-up (including some great photos) of Modern Warfare 2’s launch event in South Africa that took place yesterday to celebrate the release of the game.

[Modern Warfare 2 Update No. 2]

After downloading patch 1.02 for the PS3 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, there is a high probability that you won’t be able to access any online matches.

After personally downloading the patch, and trying to play an online multiplayer match, I was met with the following message:

  • Fetching Playlist…
  • Updating Ranks and Unlocks…
  • Connecting to Matchmaking Server Complete

After the message is displayed, there is no further activity, and no further connections made in order to progress into a match.

Infinity Ward is no doubt working on a fix right now, but it is at least a little disheartening to not be able to play the PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2 online right now.

Gamers enjoy being rewarded for their in-game actions over and above the joy they get from actually playing the game, as the Xbox 360’s Achievement system has ably demonstrated, providing an incentive to continue playing with a ‘ding’ sound, an on-screen graphic, and a sprinkle of points added to an ever increasing total.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Limited Edition Final Boxart This same longevity trick found its way onto the PS3 and its library of games in the form of the Trophy system, officially, in July last year, now required to be included in any game released for the system.

Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PS3 released in June last year, however, and as a result doesn’t have support for the superficial Trophy reward system. Fans of the game have been grumbling about its inclusion since Trophies went live, though, which has grown into an audible protest, asking developers Kojima Productions to retrofit Trophies into the game by way of a patch, as other developers have done with their games.

During a recent Kojima Productions Report podcast, Sean Eyestone addressed fans’ comments on the lack of Trophy support for Metal Gear Solid 4:

Naughty Dog have released a 13 meg patch for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, that will allow players to earn Trophies, the equivalent of the Xbox 360’s Achievements.

Uncharted’s in-game ‘medal’ achievements worked out perfectly for the new reward system and translates perfectly to the Trophy system. Because of the availability of downloadable save games on-line, however, you’ll have to start a new game to earn the Trophies. It’s a great game, so this gives you an excuse to pick it up again. To get the patch, simply start up Uncharted and you’ll be prompted to download it.

The Trophy system was introduced in one of the latest PS3 firmware updates. Not only will you be able to earn these Trophies in future games, such as Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet, but some developers are retro-fitting the system into games already released, as is the case with Uncharted.

Sony has announced that firmware update v2.36 for the PS3 will be launching soon. According to SCEA’s blog, v2.36 will “improve system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles.”

PSN Operations Director Eric Lempel also brought glad tidings of in-game XMB in v2.4, something which PS3 gamers have been requesting for months. “We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include ‘XMB’ access in-game.”

Lempel then went on to confirm that “the update will also include ‘trophies,’ an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements.”

Although no specific date was given for v2.4, Lempel did promise “to share all of the official details shortly.”
