Silent Hill: Downpour Logo

The Silent Hill series has always managed to carve out a unique space for itself in a market flooded with too many games trying to do the same thing. The atmospheric and lonely locales scattered around the run-down town of Silent Hill always seem to inspire moments of self-reflection - an unusual emotion to experience when playing a video game.

We always knew that there’d be tons of new PlayStation Vita details revealed at the Tokyo Game Show, but what we’ve seen and heard over the last couple of days is even more exciting than I initially imagined.

PS Vita Angled

One of the biggest features announced for PS Vita so far has to be its ability to play PS3 titles via Remote Play. The PSP has a similar feature which allows you to remotely browse your PS3’s XMB, listen to music and watch movies on its hard drive, or play PSone Classics. A couple of PS3 games such as Lair can even be played remotely on PSP.

PSV Top

Japan is the place to be this December when the PlayStation Vita makes its worldwide debut there on the 17th. Those lucky ladies and gentlemen with a bit of cash to spare after buying the feature-laden handheld and a game or two from the 26 titles on offer will probably be making a beeline for the accessories shelf, which will offer all sorts of official Sony extras for their precious new acquisition.

Tokyo Game Show

This year’s Tokyo Game Show (TGS) runs from 15 - 18 September and will be host to hundreds of games all vying for Japanese consumers’ hard-earned yen. The PlayStation Vita, which goes on sale in Japan in a few months time, will undoubtedly offer a massive incentive for the public to attend this year’s event.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has announced that their PS Vita booth at TGS will have 31 playable titles spread across some 80 Vita stations. There’ll also be additional games which will only be shown in trailer form.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Logo

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced all the way back at E3 2006 yet the game still looks to be a long way off. Despite what its title may suggest, FF Versus XIII is more akin to the Kingdom Hearts series in terms of gameplay, featuring action RPG elements rather than the “active time battle” system used in the main Final Fantasy games.

Tokyo Game Show ImageTo properly put Tokyo Game Show 2010 to bed, the organisers of the event, CESA, held the Future Division Awards ceremony to recognize the top ten videogames to be released in the next year.

The award winners are voted on by Tokyo Game Show attendees over the first three days of the event. This year there were 183 titles to choose from, but only ten could be voted as the best games of the next 12 months.

In no particular order, the ten chosen games were:

Ryu ga Gotoku Of the End Logo

Earlier this year, SEGA revealed that a new PS3 Yakuza game was in the works, featuring series-long character and notorious gangster, Goro Majima, in the lead role.

Now that the name of this latest Yakuza game has been revealed to be Ryu ga Gotoku Of the End (not much help for Western fans of the game, but it’s a name alright), we can sneak some peeks at a handful of screenshots from the title showcasing some of the characters:

It’s been announced via an interview with MCV that Ubisoft will be dropping their annual Ubidays press event for 2009, in favour of refocusing their efforts on E3 this year. The two-day expo has previously seen over 1000 journalists and industry executives visit the show, while 2008’s event was held in the Louvre museum.

Ubisoft LogoA spokesperson for Ubisoft said; “With regards to Ubidays, with the E3 event in the US, the GamesCom in Europe and Tokyo Games Show in Japan, we think that we’ll have great outlets to present our creativity and innovation to a worldwide audience and will therefore reconsider our plans. There won’t be a Ubidays this year.”

Ubisoft follow both SEGA and THQ in dropping their joint publisher-specific press event, the Business Partners Summit, which has also seen two years of successful operation.

Look forward to E3 and the Tokyo Games Show instead, then.
