[Update] This just keeps getting better! A debut trailer for Twisted Pixel’s latest game has been released! Check it out below! [End of Update]
We’ve been patiently waiting for close on two weeks now for downloadable game masters Twisted Pixel to announce the studio’s next fantastic title, and now, finally, the developer has obliged by revealing the existence of a follow-up to 2009’s action platform and puzzle game, Splosion Man.
The name of this follow-up? Ms. Splosion Man.
Twisted Pixel released the following excellent press release, reproduced here in full due to the aforementioned excellence:
Indie game developer Twisted Pixel has rapidly become one of the ‘go to’ studios for original, creative and humorous titles, starting with the excellent action adventure game, The Maw, in early 2009, continuing on with the awesomeness of ‘Splosion Man later that year, and capping it all off with the 2010 release of the brilliant Comic Jumper.
Now, Twisted Pixel is teasing the announcement of the company’s fourth mystery game with a countdown clock on its website, with the reveal set to happen on December 2nd.
But… maybe it’s not the studio’s fourth game. Maybe it’s something else?
Are you having a bit of a bad day? A bad week, even? Do you need a good, solid pick-me-up game to help slap a smile on your face?
Well my friend, look no further than the latest addition to Xbox LIVE Arcade’s line-up of games, Comic Jumper!
Already being called ‘hilarious’ by basically everyone residing on the Internet, Comic Jumper is what one would term a ‘mega-action, super-platform game,’ as this title simply wouldn’t be content with normal videogame standards and conventions.
If you’ve seen any gameplay footage, you’ll certainly understand!
You may not know his name, but you certainly know his game – game developer Dan Teasdale has been working at Harmonix for a number of years, contributing to the development of a few iterations of Rock Band in a variety of roles, including senior and lead designer.
Now that development of the currently in-the-works Rock Band 3 is coming to a close, Teasdale has decided it’s time to try something a little different, and get back to a development role that allows him both the freedom to “help drive the vision and direction of a game,” and be more hands-on with a game, and “physically implement and iterate on the low level of making games in a more substantial way than time affords me when working as a lead on multi-hundred person titles.”
Twisted Pixel has finally opened the doors to its new store, allowing fans to take home their very own Maw and Splosion Man.
After having a totally Mawsome time with The Maw, you will no doubt want to give a home to this 9 inch model of the purple monster with the large tongue who enjoys eating Yums. You can even buy one signed by The Maw development team!

Developers Twisted Pixel have announced that they are already “hard at work” on their next project. As with The Maw and Splosion Man, the third project will be an original IP.
According to a post on the developer’s website, “If you liked Splosion Man, you’re going to love this one. It’s the game we’ve always wanted to make… now we are.”
Fans of The Maw will be happy to read that Twisted Pixel Games will be releasing the second round of downloadable content for their popular XBLA title.
The first DLC landed in February in the form of a deleted scene called Brute Force. This time round we can look forward to a new level called River Redirect which will be released on Xbox Live Marketplace tomorrow for 100 points.
According to the developer, “raging fires block Frank and Maw’s way” in this deleted scene from The Maw. The pair will have to use the powers of the Gastro and Puff-tor creatures to change the river’s course and reopen the path in the Looferland level.
Canada-based Hothead Games (famous for its popular RPG series, On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness) has teamed up with independent developers to bring some of the latest titles to new gaming platforms.
Jonathan Blow’s Braid launched on Xbox Live Arcade in 2008 and blew gamers away with its innovative gameplay and distinctive art style. Hothead and Blow have partnered to bring Braid to the Mac.
The Maw by Twisted Pixel landed on Xbox Live Arcade last month and delighted gamers with its memorable characters and challenging puzzles. Now Hothead will be bringing The Maw to the PC, “integrating special features to make the crowd-pleaser compatible with multiple as-of-yet-unannounced digital distribution platforms and services.”
El33tonline game the thumbs-up to both titles. Check out our reviews of Braid and The Maw to see why.
There are two rather intriguing bits of downloadable content (DLC) on Xbox LIVE Arcade today, as not only Snowblind Studios’ long-in-development Death Tank arrives on the service, but additional content for The Maw has also surfaced. Death Tank is described thus:
“Through Xbox LIVE, up to eight tanks can simultaneously enter the arena for exciting co-op or chaotic free-for-all play! Devastating weapons and unique items give your tank unlimited destructive power. Eight separate landscapes react to tank combat, altering their shape when hit and providing an ever changing environment in which to play.”
The Maw’s DLC, on the other hand, is described as a ‘deleted scene’ from the full game, as the Bounty Hunters have sent an elite strike force, known as the Brutes, to stop the game’s protagonists, Frank and Maw. This story apparently takes place between the Bulb Valley and Chaindown levels from The Maw.
Earlier in the week we brought you news of DLC plans for The Maw. Since then developer Twisted Pixel has confirmed to El33tonline that they are indeed working on three new levels of DLC for their popular XBLA title.
According to Michael Wilford, CEO of Twisted Pixel Games, “When we were wrapping up development on the main game a few months ago we decided to spend that time working on new content. We had a bunch of ideas left over that we knew could be turned into new levels.”
“And with our engine, anything is possible through DLC. We can create new characters, game mechanics, anything. I think people will be pretty surprised by what we are packing into the new levels. They will be larger levels and have a lot of cool new things in them. Each level will be just 100 points, but I don’t know when they will be released yet.”
We thought the game was totally mawesome and described The Maw as an “outstanding product, well polished and radiating originality with endearing characters that will remain in your mind long after the game has finished.” Check out our review to see why you should give the game a try and stay tuned for more details on the DLC soon.
Twisted Pixel has revealed that it plans to release three new levels for The Maw soon.
Speaking to Kotaku, the developer announced that it is working on the new levels which will be released on the Xbox 360 as downloadable content “over the coming weeks.” A date has yet to be announced but it will not all be released on the same day.
The three levels will play as “deleted scenes” from the game and players will be able to enjoy them by selecting “Deleted Scenes” from the menu of the game. The levels will be called Brute Force, River Redirect and The Speeder Lane. Each level will cost 100 Microsoft Points and will include a new achievement.
The Maw was released on Xbox Live Arcade last week. We thought it was “an outstanding product, well polished and radiating originality with endearing characters” so make sure you check out our review.
As soon as you meet The Maw’s characters you will be hooked. Not only is the concept original and the characters bursting with personality, but the creativeness and charm that the game exudes will captivate you for the duration of the game and leave you wanting maw.
The game begins with an alien named Frank being detained in a spaceship along with various other rather suspicious looking creatures. Soon afterwards the ship crash lands on an unfamiliar planet and he finds himself alone with a strange creature that could best be described as a cute pink blob with a large eye.

The Maw, an excellent looking Xbox LIVE Arcade game, is a game in which you need to control (and harness the power of) a character called Maw, a creature that eats everything in sight and is able to take on the properties of the organisms he (it?) eats.
Below, you can check out an example of that transformation, as Maw eats a creature with fire properties, transforming him (it?!) into a fire-breathing monster.
The Maw, in all its brilliant charm, is available now on Xbox LIVE Arcade for the amusingly low sum of 800 MS Points. Have a look at El33tonline’s exclusive interview with The Maw creators, Twisted Pixel, over here.
Twisted Pixel’s highly anticipated debut title, The Maw, arrives on Xbox Live Arcade today.
This 3D action-adventure costs 800 Microsoft Points and sees players controlling an alien named Frank as he tries to manage The Maw, a cute little blob with an insatiable appetite that makes him the most dangerous creature in the galaxy.
The story begins after a Galactic Bounty Hunter ship crash lands on a strange planet, with Frank and the Maw the only survivors. The journey for the odd pair starts after Frank is afraid to travel alone so he hooks The Maw to a plasma leash. They set out towards a communication tower, trying to stay a step ahead of the bounty hunters and the strange new creatures on the planet including the Gastro, Loofer, Yums, Gloobers and even Snuffles.

To bring you up to speed, The Maw is a 3D action-adventure where players take control of Frank, a simple alien, who partners with The Maw, a glowing blob with an insatiable appetite that has helped earn him the rather unfortunate reputation of “The Deadliest Organism in the Universe.”

- El33tonline: The Maw is Twisted Pixel’s debut title and you have been working on the game for a long time now (development started in October 2007) – are you nervous about how the game will be received, whether it will live up to people’s expectations, or excited about the game’s launch given that it has already won various awards including The Pax 10 2008 Audience Choice Award.
All. The whole team is really excited that the game is going to finally be released and that everyone will have a chance to play it. At the same time I think we are all a little bit nervous…we are very proud of what we created with The Maw, but there is always that little feeling in your gut that people won’t enjoy it and that is where that nervousness comes from. I really think once the game comes out though that nervous feeling will go away, lol!
