With Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, Nintendo have been trying to make Zelda more accessible to the huge audience on the DS platform. In many ways they have succeeded, but it comes at a cost to those who love the Zelda series for their sense of adventure. With Spirit Tracks, the overworld is reduced to a series of connected points – those who like dungeons will find much to enjoy here, but those who like to simply explore a world of possibility, you’ll have to wait for the next console Zelda – Skyward Sword.

According to worldwide life-to-date sales data released by Nintendo earlier today, three of the publisher’s titles, namely Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, have all surpassed 10 million units sold for the period of April 1st 2009 to December 31st 2009.
The launch trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks has been released to mark the release of the DS game in North America, while also heralding its upcoming release on Friday (December 11th) in Europe.
The trailer introduces us to the backstory and setup for Spirit Tracks, and shows us glimpses of the train-based combat, and what kinds of new challenges we can expect to arise from this new travel mechanic.

With the release of Link’s latest adventure just around the corner, Nintendo has released a new trailer for the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the DS.
No longer content to be kidnapped from Hyrule and wait around for adventurer Link to save her, Spirit Tracks sees Zelda and Link teaming up for the first time in the 23-year history of The Legend of Zelda series.
Nintendo of America has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will be available for the DS across North America on the 7th of December.
First unveiled at the Game Developer’s Conference earlier this year, Spirit Tracks looks graphically very similar to the previous Zelda game on the DS, Phantom Hourglass, but this time sees Link commanding the direction of a train to progress in the adventure, exploring dungeons and using new items to solve puzzles.

[UPDATE]The new adventure will make use of the intuitive touch control of Phantom Hourglass and promises to “please longtime Zelda fans while keeping the game accessible to all DS owners.” Players will use a steam locomotive to travel around the world, switching between Phantom and Link to explore the dungeons, all the while using new items to solve puzzles.
During Satoru Iwata’s keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), a new DS Zelda game was unveiled by the name of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.
Spirit Tracks, graphically, looks very similar to the previous Zelda outing on the DS, Phantom Hourglass, but this time sees Link commanding the direction of a train to progress through the adventure.
