A complete history of role-playing videogames - Banner

When last we met, we’d been taking a peek under the duvet of history and marvelling at the influences that Western RPGs had on Eastern RPGs. This influence would continue for a while, and later on even be reciprocated, but for now let’s pick up the trail of this history back in the West, and see what followed in the footsteps of Wizardry, Ultima, Rogue-likes and Telengard.

Link: Deep in Thought About El33tonline

Earlier this week we wrote about Link and his newfound quest to travel across South Africa to seek out the love of his life, Princess Zelda.

While his quest might be coming to an end with a massive party in Johannesburg on Saturday, and preparations are currently underway for this event, Link did take some time out of his busy adventuring schedule to post a video on the FindingZelda YouTube account to thank El33tonline for spreading the word:

“It’s dangerous to go alone…”

With these words, Link set off on his first ever adventures in the sprawling lands of Hyrule, but as the years wore on, the legendary advice given to Link as a boy has come to mean more than simply ‘carry a sword’ and ‘be prepared’ while on a quest.

Much more.

Link has learned that it’s dangerous to go alone in life, too, and has finally sought to profess his true feelings to Princess Zelda of Hyrule and live happily ever after with the woman of his dreams.

The problem is, Zelda is nowhere to be found.

Despite a slow start, the 3DS appears to be picking up momentum as we approach the all-important holiday season. With titles like Super Mario 3D Land, Sonic Generations and Mario Kart 7 just weeks away, Nintendo’s handheld is finally getting the type of software support which was so badly lacking at launch.

We’ve known about the existence of a new Zelda for quite some time now. In fact it’s almost a year to the day since Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto announced that a new Legend of Zelda title for the Wii was in development at last year’s E3 roundtable conference.

At that stage we were only shown an illustration of Link with Miyamoto explaining that he would like to make the new game compatible with Wii MotionPlus and that it would probably only be released in 2011.

According to a reader-voted list appearing in the latest iteration of Guinness World Records’ Gamer’s Edition book, Bungie’s Halo franchise is the best videogame series of all time.

Halo 3 Master Chief

Guinness World Records gaming editor Gaz Deaves said that instead of asking “developers, industry insiders and journalists to rank their favorite titles,” the team at Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition took a different approach and decided to approach “a different kind of expert: the players themselves!”

“We are confident that this ‘top 50’ more accurately reflects the tastes of the average gamer and not just the critics,” said Deaves.

There’s no doubt of that, as the 13 000 online voters pushed not only one fan favourite online shooter straight to the top of the list, but another, the Call of Duty franchise, found its way into second place on the list.

Do you want to see the rest of the ‘Top 50 Videogame Series of All Time’ list (which features The Legend of Zelda and No. 3, Guitar Hero at No. 4 and Metal Gear at No. 5)?

The Legend of Zelda - NESTo celebrate reaching their 200th issue, videogame print magazine Game Informer has compiled a list of 200 games that they feel are the best that the game industry has to offer across all platforms, from past classics to recent smash hits, based on not only the experience that the games presented upon their original release, but their impact on the industry as a whole.

Right at the top of the list is the original NES version of The Legend of Zelda, followed by Super Mario Bros. (also on the NES) and Tetris (the 1984 PC version, to be specific).

The list also includes entries to the Grand Theft Auto, Doom, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Call of Duty and Metal Gear Solid series, amongst many, many more.

The full list of Game Informer’s top 200 games follows below:

Earlier in the week Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that a new Zelda game for the Wii is currently in development. Miyamoto made this reveal at a developer’s roundtable conference, but unfortunately Nintendo did not allow any of the people present to take pictures of the concept art for the new Zelda game.

Nintendo has since released the concept art which you can enjoy below.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - LinkDespite Nintendo revealing no fewer than three new Mario games (New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story) as well as a new installment in the popular Metroid franchise (Metroid: Other M), most fans were still not happy with the publisher’s E3 press conference last night. The reason has something to do with a rather well-known yellow-haired lad that resides in Hyrule kingdom with a fair princess.

And while many of the big names of Nintendo were on stage during the press event (Reggie Fils-Aime, Satoru Iwata and Cammie Dunaway), the presence of one famous man was sorely missed by most.
